Damen Stan Pontoons to Support London’s ‘Super Sewer’ Construction

The Ferrovial Agroman Laing O'Rourke joint venture (FLO) has taken delivery of two Damen Stan Pontoons. FLO will deploy the vessels – a SPo 7120 and a SPo 4113 – for marine infrastructure construction duties on the Thames Tideway Tunnel project in London. The joint venture company has also chartered a smaller SPo 3011 for a period of one year. Considered to be one of the most important civil engineering projects currently under construction, the Thames Tideway Tunnel represents the modernization of London’s subterranean sewage system.

Laborde Marine Get Necessary Finance for Expansion

GE Capital, Corporate Finance has announced that it provided US$22.5-million in equipment financing to Laborde Marine. The funds refinance existing debt used to purchase five new crew boats. Founded in 1995 and headquartered in New Orleans, LA, Laborde Marine is a privately held supplier that provides marine support to the offshore oil and gas industry internationally. They operate more than 20 vessels in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and have two international offices in Brazil. “GE Capital delivered the financing we need to fund the ongoing expansion of our fleet and customer base,” said Cliffe Laborde, managing member of Laborde Marine.

Offshore Vessel Operators Suffer As Gulf Oil Output Sags

As seen in the August edition of MarineNews, Susan Buchanan updates readers on the GOM oil production situation. BP's gushing well was capped more than a year ago but life is hardly back to normal in the U.S. Gulf--where rigs and vessels remain underutilized. At least ten rigs have moved overseas since last summer. Gulf oil production is below pre-spill levels and won't recover anytime soon, analysts say. Issuance of drilling permits picked up this spring as operators agreed to use oil-containment systems but permitting lags earlier rates.

VT Halter Appoints Laborde Board Director

VT Halter Marine, Inc. (VT Halter Marine), a subsidiary of VT Systems, Inc. (VT Systems), announced the appointment of Cliffe F. Laborde to its Board of Directors. Laborde is owner and co-manager of Laborde Marine Services, LLC and Laborde Brothers Crewboats, LLC. These companies own and operate platform supply vessels and crewboats that service the offshore energy sector. Laborde previously held the position of Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary to Tidewater, Inc. until June 2007. Prior to his appointment at Tidewater, Laborde was one of four founding partners of the firm Gelpi, Sullivan, Carroll & Laborde, where his practice primarily involved maritime defense litigation.

Harold Mathers Retires

After 50 years at the helm, founding President Harold Mathers has retired from ZF Mathers. Mathers signed papers a year ago transferring ownerships of the company to ZF Marine, the world’s largest supplier of marine propulsion systems. Russ Polansky, formerly branch manager of ZFI Marine in Seattle, was appointed to head up the AF Mathers facility. As part of the agreement with ZF Marine, Mathers stayed actively involved in day-to-day operations until a smooth transition had been made. Mathers credits the company’s long history and sustained profitability to a team that includes a core group of loyal employees. He reported that he did not seriously consider a buyout proposal until ZF Marine approached him two years ago. “I expected to retire some day, but I wasn’t in any great hurry.

ZF Fortifies Product Line, Business Plan

Consolidation of manufacturing and service entities is perhaps the world's worst kept secret. Marine propulsion manufacturers, in particular, have been rapidly consolidating companies, lines and capabilities in order to broaden their organizations to be truly global, while filling any holes in the power range along the way. ZF, a renowned maker of marine transmissions, has done this and more in becoming a single source propulsion supplier. The expansion of the product line includes a complete propulsion systems was part of ZF Marine's strategic plan established in January 1999. It has now become a reality, with the founding of the Propulsion Systems division, based at ZF Padova.

Tidewater Reorganizes Management

Tidewater Inc. announced that, effective immediately, Cliffe F. Laborde, Larry T. Rigdon and Dean E. Taylor have been promoted to the level of Executive Vice President. Each will report directly to William C. O'Malley, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. Cliffe F. Laborde will continue as General Counsel of the company. His responsibilities will also include Corporate Administration, Information Technology, Employee Benefits, Insurance and Human Resource Management, including recruiting, personnel, training and vessel crewing, all on a worldwide basis. He will also assume responsibility for overseeing management of Quality Shipyards. Larry T. Rigdon will continue his full operations responsibilities for the United States Gulf of Mexico, California and Alaska.

NAVSEA Warfare Centers Hold First Annual Awards Ceremony

The leadership of NAVSEA's Warfare Centers presented the first in an annual series of awards to highlight and recognize groups and individuals who are working to ensure that the Warfare Center Enterprise vision becomes a reality. In an Oct. 4th ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard, eleven groups and 66 individuals were recognized in three categories: Innovation; Collaboration; Transformation and Change Agent. The awards were presented by the Warfare Center (WC) workforce executive, Dr. Ken Baile, in conjunction with Rear Adm. Steven Johnson, Commander of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Mr. Charles Giacchi, Technical Director of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and Don McCormack, Technical Director, NUWC.
