SHIPPINGInsight and CMA to Be Held Back-to-back

Two U.S. shipping conferences have joined forces to create the first ever North American Shipping Week, to be held October 12-16 in Stamford, Conn., organizers announced Thursday.SHIPPINGInsight will open the week on October 12, one day ahead of its orginal opening date, followed back-to-back by CMA Shipping starting on the afternoon of October 14. CMA Shipping, originally scheduled to be held from March 31 through April 2, had been rescheduled to take place June 29-July 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

RMI Maintains Qualship 21 Status

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) has been recognized on the United States Coast Guard's (USCG's) QUALSHIP 21 roster for 2019-2020. The USCG program rewards vessels for commitment to safety and quality when calling at ports in the United States (US).Only flag States which maintain a port State control (PSC) detention ratio of 1.00% or less over a three-year period and also meet a stringent set of judgement criteria are eligible for the program.A vessel registered in a flag State with QUALSHIP 21 certification may apply to be certified for QUALSHIP 21 by completing an application found on the USCG website. The RMI is the only leading registry to have maintained this position for 15 consecutive years…

Marshall Islands Registry is "Number Two"

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) fleet now stands at 223,262,177 deadweight tons (DWT), making it the second largest registry in the world in terms of DWT. International Registries, Inc. and its affiliates (IRI) have provided administrative and technical support to the RMI Registry since 1990. "This is a very significant milestone for the RMI Registry," said Bill Gallagher, President, IRI. "A strong legislative framework, customer driven service ethos, and a commitment to quality have all been key to our continued success," he continued. Marshall Islands Becomes Largest Tanker Flag

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Registry has attained status as the world's largest tanker fleet following the addition of tonnage from markets in Greece, the U.S. and Asia over the summer. The RMI flagged tanker fleet stands at 44.6 million gross tons (GT). International Registries, Inc. and its affiliates (IRI), which provide administrative and technical support to the RMI Maritime and Corporate Registries, is committed to the continued decentralization of services to better support the Registry's owners and operators in every aspect of their business.

Fleet Resource Management Takes a Step Forward

Ship owners, managers, operators, flag states and training academies have partaken in extensive discussions on how to create a single, shared data environment for ship, shore, traffic control and training schools, during the closed forum organized by Transas at the CMA Shipping 2016 this month. This convening follows the launch of the Transas Harmonized Eco System of Integrated Solutions (THESIS) vision in January this year. Republic of the Marshall Islands Maintains Qualitative Edge

The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) received preliminary information regarding the United States Coast Guard’s (USCG’s) Qualship 21 list during Intertanko’s North American Panel meeting. The meeting, which took place on day one of the Connecticut Maritime Association’s (CMA’s) Shipping 2016 conference, was the largest attended North American Panel meeting to date. Rear Admiral Paul Thomas, Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy, USCG presented the preliminary results showing the RMI on the Qualship 21 list for 2016. While these results are preliminary, the final results will be presented in the USCG’s 2016 Annual Report scheduled to be released in early summer. There were 26 eligible flag States in 2015 of which 13 fell off the 2016. Qualship 21 preliminary list.

Key Issues of Concern to Maritime Industry

KVH Industries, Inc., hosted maritime industry leaders for a frank discussion about cyber security prior to the start of the CMA Shipping 2016 conference in Stamford, Connecticut. During the roundtable, a range of concerns about the current level of vulnerability emerged. Among the key issues identified were complacency by ship operators, lack of training for crew, non-existent contingency plans for dealing with a cyber attack, and the need for a set of best practices for minimizing risks. “We need to bring the same best practices that we expect on shore and in our corporate networks to ships,” said Rick Driscoll, KVH vice president of satellite products and services.

ISS Expands in Mexico

Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS), the world's leading maritime and logistics service provider, has expanded its operations in Mexico with the opening of a new office in Veracruz. The Veracruz office, ISS’ fourth in the country, will enable it to cover 80 per cent of ports with the greatest commercial activity across the Gulf of Mexico. One of the oldest and largest ports in Mexico, a new development project at the Port of Veracruz will also increase at the capacity by a further 25 per cent when completed in 2018. Located to the east of Mexico, the port is multifunctional with numerous specialist terminals including container, chemicals, general cargo and vehicles.

Ballast water treatment technology developer Ecochlor Inc. presented a project case study at CMA Shipping 2015, a case study which covered the retrofit of Ecochlor’s ballast water treatment system (BWTS) aboard the 2007-built RoRo car carrier vessel M/V Green Bay following an order from International Shipholding Corporation (ISH) in 2013. ISH ordered Ecochlor systems for seven of its ships, including vehicle carriers and bulk carriers, to be installed between 2014 and 2016.
