Coastal Watch Center Opens in Philippines

A new National Coast Watch Center (NCWC) for maritime security has opened in the Republic of the Philippines. Raytheon Company designed, implemented and equipped the center and its coastal system using the company's integrated border security solutions. The NCWC is the hub of the Philippines' National Coast Watch System for maritime security. The system improves the ability of the country's maritime forces to detect, prevent and deter threats and security risks across its territorial waters. The Raytheon team also provided communication and surveillance solutions for the islands of Palawan and Cebu with associated training and sustainment for the Filipino operators.

Maritime Museum Fundraises to Honor Rescue Services

The recession has generated difficult times for many Americans, yet it has failed to weaken the generosity of the National Maritime Museum Cornwall visitors, who have raised nearly $12,000 for the rescue services in the last few months. The Museum’s cherished Search & Rescue exhibition celebrates the Maritime Rescue Services. Honoring their work, a charity box has been installed for donations with plans of future distribution spanning all the partners involved in the exhibition. Though, the donation box is not the only addition made to the museum.

SAAB Provides AIS For Malaysia

Saab TransponderTech has been awarded a contract to supply a coastal Automatic Identification System (AIS) network for the east coast of the Malaysian peninsula and an integration of all AIS systems in the country. The contract was awarded to Saab by the Marine Department in Malaysia, and the work is being completed in collaboration with Saab’s Malaysian partner, Maicons Technology. Saab was contracted earlier to supply the AIS coastal network for the west coast of the Malaysian peninsula (Straits of Malacca) and the Sarawak installations. The contract has recently been completed and provides a fully integrated AIS-based Monitoring and Control System with complete coverage of the entire Malaysian coastline, stretching over 1,200 Nautical miles from east to west.

Australia Strengthens Maritime Security

Australia’s offshore maritime security is to be further strengthened through a series of linked initiatives that will be implemented progressively through 2005. These measures, recommended by the Government’s Taskforce on Offshore Maritime Security, build on previously announced border protection and maritime security initiatives. They focus, in particular, on the protection of Australia’s offshore oil and gas facilities, and on ensuring that any terrorist threat to Australia’s maritime assets and our coastline can be quickly detected and defeated. In implementing these initiatives the government is committing a further $10.6 million to the more than $187 million we have committed to upgrading off-shore maritime security since July 2004.

Austal Patrol Boats Participate in Joint Operation

Police from the Marine Area Command have coordinated a three-day joint operation designed to test the capabilities of state and federal agencies working together in a major border protection exercise. The operation, which began yesterday, involves NSW Police officers from areas including Marine Area Command and POLair, supported by police from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command. Operation Baker is a multi-agency initiative co-ordinated by NSW Police and supported by Australian Customs Service, NSW Fisheries, Australian Fisheries and Management Authority, NSW Maritime Authority, Australian Federal Police, and Queensland Police. The exercise is targeting illegal activities in the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone out to 200 nautical miles to sea.

Navy Activates Detachment in Sarangani

Philippine Navy officials activated a naval detachment Friday for maritime security and to catch illegal fishermen, pirates, and illegal entrants, according to a Sun Star report. The Glan detachment, which is part of the naval forces in eastern Mindanao based in Davao City would also watch over maritime vessels passing to and from Makar Wharf in nearby General Santos City. The naval detachment backs up the naval coast watch station at Tinaka Point, also in Glan, and floating assets deployed thereat, according to the report. In June, a modern naval facility opened at Tinaka Point in Barangay Batulaki for a 24-hour watch over major sea routes in Sarangani and General Santos City. Source: Sun Star
