What is Known About the Nord Stream Gas Pipeline Leaks?

(Photo: Danish Ministry of Defence)

Unexplained gas leaks detected in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines from Russia to Germany have prompted investigations by European countries into the cause, including possible sabotage.Denmark's armed forces on Tuesday released video showing bubbles rushing to the surface of the Baltic Sea above the pipelines, and said the largest gas leak had caused surface disturbance of well over 1 kilometer in diameter. Here is a breakdown of what is known so far:What happened? The operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline reported a sudden drop in pressure overnight on Monday…

Solitaire on Nord Stream 2 Job in Russia

Allseas-owned pipelay vessel Solitaire has started laying the first line of the Nord Stream 2 twin gas pipeline in Russian waters.Solitaire will spend about a month constructing one of the two  approximately 100-kilometres-long sections in the Russian territorial sea.Solitaire, operated by Allseas, is a 300-metres-long and 41-metres-wide dynamically positioned vessel that will lay pipes around the clock seven days a week. It accommodates up to 420 people on board.A vessel that is positioned using thrusters instead of anchors helps to minimise the impact on the environment and marine traffic, as only the pipeline itself touches the seabed along the pipeline route. The activities are performed in accordance with the national permits granted by responsible authorities.

What to Know When Welding Primer-Coated Steel

Photo: Hobart

Solving one problem can create another. Safety always comes first. Amid competitive bidding, contract deadlines and the general drive to gain the best productivity and quality, welding operations in the shipbuilding industry face their own set of challenges. That’s especially true when it comes to welding primer-coated steel, a material prevalent for its ability to withstand atmospheric corrosion from sources such as saltwater. Most primer coatings are zinc-based and used on steel that is between 70 to 120 ksi in strength (and sometimes higher).

Marine Sanitary Devices: Size Matters

When it comes to marine sewage, it pays to measure. It turns out that the physical size of the equipment itself is not your only worry. Marine Sanitation Devices: (perhaps) the three dirtiest words in the nautical lexicon. Nevertheless, Marine Sanitary Devices – or MSD’s, as they are affectionately known – are pre-engineered, pre-packaged blackwater/greywater treatment systems. We don’t like to talk about it, we know that waste streams are treated and – we hope – that they are also in compliance. Installed on all manners of vessels, nowhere are these devices (arguably) as important as the ones that provide service on the myriad of inland and brown water workboats.

Managing BWT Costs and Compliance

Bill Burroughs

Managing systems costs, redundancy are key to Ballast Water Convention Compliance. The current market position for ballast water treatment systems is similar to the early phase of the introduction of oily water separators. Eventually, the systems that did not work reliably were forced out, but at great expense to shipowners. While some ballast water treatment system manufacturers struggle to meet the regulatory and operational requirements of global trade, regulators are still…

BALPURE BWT System is BV Type Approved

Type-Approved BALPURE ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora.

The Type-Approved BALPURE ballast water treatment system from Severn Trent De Nora has received type approval from classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) for its full range of standard ballast water treatment systems that can treat ballast water flow rates of up to 5,000 m3/h. Standard systems can be supplied as multiple sets to treat higher flow rates. The type approval was granted by BV following stringent review of the BALPURE system per BV rules and guidelines along with the guidelines contained in the IMO Resolution MEPC.174(58).

ALPURE Ballast Water Treatment System Successfully Completes Corrosion Testing Program

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. – 9 March 2011 – The BALPURE ballast water treatment systemfrom Severn Trent De Nora satisfies corrosion test recommendations of the IMO MEPC 59/2/16. The corrosion testing, performed by an independent third-party institute, proved the BALPURE system has no effect on coated steel, naval bronze and Cu-Ni alloys. Testing proved an insignificant effect on bare steel – so small that the acceleration of corrosion due to the presence of free chlorine has minimal practical implications in ballast tanks.

Chemical tanker Stolt Island, one of a series of six sister vessels, has been selected as a Significant Ship of 2009 by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. She was delivered to her owners with 18 SOLASAFE anti glare roller screens at her navigation bridge windows. When in use the screens will reject the glare, heat and uv light from the sun. The benefits of the screens’ infra red rejecting properties are three fold; creating a more comfortable working environment, reducing air conditioning running costs and reducing Green House Gas emissions.

DNV IMO-Approves Bio Sewage Plant from G&O

Det Norske Veritas (DNV) has just IMO-approved the biological sewage treatment plant from Gertsen & Olufsen (G&O), a leading Scandinavian developer of a.o. sewage treatment systems targeted for ships and offshore use. The revised guidelines on treatment of black water, IMO MECP 159(55) Resolution, comes into effect on Jan. 1, 2010. As the resolution entails new and significantly stricter standards, it represents a massive challenge to shipbuilders and designers. The guidelines apply to sewage treatment plants on ships of 400 grt and above as well as on smaller ships certified to carry a crew of more than 15. One answer to the technological challenge has surfaced following DNV’s approval of the G&O Bioreactor in accordance with the new IMO resolution.
