Marine Coatings: GIT and WEG Partner

Brazil-based WEG Coatings and Canadian-based GIT Coatings have entered an agreement to strengthen each other’s marine coating product offerings across international markets.The partnership aims to accelerate market adoption of green solutions in the marine market such as GIT’s graphene-based coatings. COATINGS: Chasing Better Prospects

As the offshore industry recovers, choosing the right hull coating for those newly activated assets will be equally important.The global offshore support vessel (OSV) market is still recovering from a protracted slump, but thankfully momentum is now returning with predictions for significant activity for OSV’s ahead. As summarized in a report by market analysts Grand View Research, projections are for the OSV market to exceed USD 71 billion by 2022 on the back of a significant increase in projects reaching final investment decision (FID) status, and a rising demand for oil and gas worldwide.

PPG Showcases Marine Coatings at SMM

PPG’s (NYSE: PPG) protective and marine coatings business will showcase four of its’ premium marine coatings solutions at SMM event in Hamburg. Amongst these is one of PPG’s most recent product innovations, the PPG SIGMAGLIDE 1290 fouling release coating. Its 100% silicone binder fouling release system utilizes a breakthrough dynamic surface regeneration technology to eliminate slime problems and dramatically increase fuel savings compared to existing fouling release products.

NSF Certification for PPG's Products, Coating Systems

PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings (PMC) business announced that four individual coatings and primers and two combined coating-and-primer systems have been certified by NSF International for water-tank applications. AMERCOAT 133/844 pit-filler is a hand-applied coating designed to fill deep holes in pitted steel surfaces with a single pass. It features a 100-percent solids formulation and emits almost zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and it trowels easily to a smooth finish. SIGMAWELD 199 primer is a weldable preconstruction primer that provides up to 12 months of corrosion protection during construction and offers extended recoatability thereafter.

DNV GL, Jotun Cooperate on Hull Performance

DNV GL and the Norwegian paint manufacturer Jotun signed a cooperation agreement to work on improving hull performance at Nor-Shipping today. The project will bring together two performance management services, Jotun’s Hull Performance Solution and DNV GL’s ECO Insight solution, to collect and analyse data on hull degradation. This will enable customers to cut their fuel bills and reduce emissions. Experts suggest that hull and propeller degradation accounts for up to 17 per cent of the world fleet’s fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

PPG Launches High-temperature Coating

PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings (PMC) business has launched PPG HI-TEMP 222G high-temperature coating that protects substrates from corrosion under insulation (CUI) and can be applied directly to hot surfaces up to 400 F. PPG HI-TEMP 222G coating can be applied in environments such as power plants, petrochemical facilities, refineries and offshore rigs. CUI is a significant problem facing these facilities, costing them millions of dollars yearly in direct damage to equipment and facility shutdowns that halt production. Independent studies have shown that between 40 and 60 percent of all pipe maintenance costs directly result from CUI.

Lonza Applauds U.S. Joining International Treaty

Lonza Applauds U.S. Lonza Microbial Control, which has long been an active supporter of an international treaty to assure the use of environmentally sound marine coatings products, applauds the United States’ formal approval of the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships. With the treaty having secured Congressional and White House approval, the U.S. will officially become a party to the treaty in November 2012. The treaty is designed to eliminate harmful antifouling systems which pose a substantial risk of toxicity to ecologically and economically important marine organisms and specifically bans all use of organotin compounds which act as biocides in antifouling systems.
