Genting Hong Kong and its Hong Kong–German shipbuilding group, MV Werften, announced a new Universal Class of cruise ships targeted at customers outside of Genting's cruise brand portfolio of Dream, Crystal and Star.The keel-laying of the second 208,000 gross ton Global Class ship for Dream Cruises took place December 10 at MV WERFTEN in Rostock.The midship section of the Global Class ship is being produced in Rostock. A keel laying ceremony for Dream Cruises’ Global-Class flagship was held at MV WERFTEN’s Rostock shipyard today.At 204,000 gross tons and with 2,500 suites and cabins, the new cruise ship designed specifically for the Asian market will be the largest ever to be built in Germany. The first section measuring 22 meters long, 26 meters wide and weighing 410 tons, about half of the full keel, marks the start of construction.Approximately 1,000 shipyard employees, partners and guests attended event.

MV WERFTEN, the shipyard group is constructing a special accommodation center for subcontractors and guests at the Alter Holzhafen in Wismar; visitors will be able to spend the night in cruise ship cabins. The new building, which comprises 104 rooms, is scheduled to open by winter 2018-2019. Assisted by Genting Hong Kong Group President, Colin Au, and Wismar’s mayor, Thomas Beyer, a time capsule containing construction plans, the latest edition of the daily newspaper, a set of euro coins, and the invitation to the event was placed in the symbolic foundation stone.

MV WERFTEN Fertigmodule GmbH will supply fully prefabricated state-of-the-art passenger and crew cabins for the ships of the Global and Endeavor Class, with the first ones due as early as spring 2018. With the building of the first reference cabin, MV WERFTEN Fertigmodule GmbH officially started production September 1. Genting Hong Kong Group President Colin Au, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Economics Minister Harry Glawe and numerous representatives of MV WERFTEN attended the landmark occasion.

Malaysian leisure liner group Star Cruises said on Thursday its president and chief executive Colin Au has stepped down due to medical reasons. "Star Cruises wishes to announce that Mr. Colin Au has resigned as president and chief executive and director of Star Cruises on medical grounds today," the company said in a statement. It did not say exactly what Au's medical problems were but added that it wished him an early recovery. "Mr. Au has been with Star Cruises since (its) inception," the statement said. "It is with much regret that the Board accepts his resignation." The statement said Lim Kok Thay, chairman of Star Cruises, will assume Au's positions.

Star Cruises Plc has chartered a vessel for three years for its Japan and South Korea operations starting in March 2000. The 950-passenger capacity vessel, MS Leeward, was chartered from Finland's Neptune Maritime Oyj and would be renamed SuperStar Taurus. The 10-deck vessel, with 475 cabins, was rebuilt in 1995. It will undergo a multi-million dollar refit in December before starting operations. SuperStar Taurus, Star Cruises' ninth vessel, will be delivered back to the owners in early 2003. "By then, we would have taken delivery of the 91,000 gross-ton SuperStar Libra and SuperStar Scorpio in 2001 and 2002 respectively," Star Cruises' President and Chief Executive Officer Colin Au said. Star Cruises plans to have a fleet of 12 vessels by 2005.
