This is the dawning of the age of AI and Big Data, huge agglomerations of new and transformative energy; almost self-generating, always strengthening and pulling at the reins, seeking to break free and run, a prospect both exciting and terrifying. That image can imply a human is holding the reins. How quaint: these days, AI itself may be holding the reins.In a review of innovation in 2023 – across any industrial or economic sector, not just maritime – AI looms large, a game-changer equivalent to IBM’s programming advances in the 1940s.

NOIA Elects McEvoy, Chairman Welch Vice Chair

The National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA) Board of Directors has elected Kevin McEvoy as Chairman and Dave Welch as Vice Chairman for the upcoming 2016-2017 term. McEvoy and Welch assumed their positions at the NOIA Annual Meeting today in Washington, D.C. Since 2011, McEvoy has served as Chief Executive Officer of Oceaneering International, Inc., global provider of engineered services and products, primarily to the offshore oil and gas industry, with a focus on deepwater applications. He also serves on the company’s board of directors, and was the NOIA Vice Chairman for the 2015-2016 term. “I am honored for the opportunity to serve as Chairman of NOIA.

PPG Donates $10,000 to NACE For Annual Scholarships

Donation supports students pursuing corrosion-, coatings-related degrees. The PPG Industries Foundation has donated $10,000 to create two annual scholarships provided through the NACE International Foundation, a 501(c)(3) entity affiliated with NACE International, The Corrosion Society. Two students pursuing postsecondary academic degrees related to corrosion or coatings each received a $5,000 scholarship on behalf of PPG. Azra Turajlic of Fort Worth, Texas, a freshman majoring in petroleum engineering at Louisiana State University.

Can O&G Drilling Methods Help Mars Exploration?

As the search for oil and gas reserves continues, exploration and production activities are occurring in increasingly harsh environments and drilling is going deeper than ever before. An experienced petroleum engineer is set to explain exactly how far this could extend – namely to Mars - at a Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen presentation and dinner meeting this month. Professor Alfred William Eustes III, a petroleum engineering and drilling specialist, will talk at the SPE Aberdeen monthly dinner and networking meeting on May 28.

2011 WJTA-IMCA Conference & Expo

High pressure waterjetting/waterblasting and industrial vacuum equipment play an integral role in industrial cleaning/recovery and surface preparation. The 2011 WJTA-IMCA Conference and Expo, to be held September 19-21, 2011, at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas, will focus on sharing information about the technology, equipment, and safety practices with industrial cleaning contractors and company representatives who contract for these services. “We invite all industrial cleaning contractors and end users who use the equipment or who are considering purchasing or renting the equipment to attend,” says association manager Ken Carroll.

Quinn Director Industrial Sales at Samson

Samson, supplier of performance cordage, announced the promotion of Michael Quinn to director of sales over its industrial division. Quinn takes over the leadership role after eighteen month’s tenure by Terry Crump. Crump served in the leadership role for the industrial division in conjunction with his role as Samson’s director of sales for the Americas for its commercial marine division. Quinn started at Samson as the customer service manager in 2007. In 2008, he began managing the recreational marine sales division. Previous to Samson, Quinn held both regional and corporate sales manager positions, in addition to various operations management roles in wire manufacturing. He also holds a bachelor-of-science degree from the Colorado School of Mines.
