When Greg Trauthwein offered me a column in Maritime Reporter & Engineering News, I received little direction with regard to subjects. I have not yet tested his boundaries of my subjects, and maybe, some day, I will try to slip in a column on the role of nautical fiction in the development of modern literature. So far, I have tried to stick with engineering subjects, although recently I may have pushed the boundaries with discussions on decision making, esthetics and OODA loops. It…

Combat Cold Corrosion via Condition Monitoring

Cold Corrosion Test Kit

The recent trend in favoring newer generation engines which offer improved fuel consumption by using a longer stroke reflects the marine industry’s focus on energy efficiency. While this design does aid operators in reducing fuel consumption, it has also created the new issue of cold corrosion. The longer stroke allows the cylinder walls to cool more than with older engine designs, allowing water condensation to form on the surface which then reacts with the sulphur dioxide in the combustion gases to form sulphuric acid, a corrosive element which damages the liner surface.

Angarsk Petrochemical launches Euro 5 fuel Production

Angarsk Petrochemical Company, a part of Rosneft processing cluster, has shipped the first lot of  Premium-95 fuel compliant with the Euro-5 standard. The production of Euro-5 fuel was provided by the investment program realization on full-scale modernization of the enterprise aiming at full transition to production of fuel compliant with the Euro-5 standard. As part of the program, a state-of-the-art fully automatic fuel blending unit was put into operation since 2012. The launching of Euro-5 fuel production will benefit the environmental situation in regions where the fuel will be sold. Euro-5 contains minimal (less than 10 ppm) amount of sulfur, aromatic hydrocarbons and benzol, the combustion products of which are most harmful for the environment.

Parker Kittiwake Extends Test Range

Parker Kittiwake, the global provider of asset control and protection technology, has launched its newly updated DIGI TBN test kit. The digital, used-oil analysis kit now gives a rapid indication of total base number (TBN) depletion in scrape down cylinder lubricants with a BN range up to 100. Recent guidance from engine manufacturers (OEMs) recommends the use of higher BN lubricants in newer engines to help prevent the damaging effects of corrosive wear. Therefore, major oil companies are now adding higher BN lubricants to their product portfolios. “With the latest Parker Kittiwake DIGI TBN test kit, ship operators using high BN lubes now have the ability to test residual TBN levels in their oil.
