Phillips Named Sr VP Of Human Resources, Carnival Cruise

Ron L. Phillips has been appointed Senior Vice President of Human Resources – Office of People and Potential for Carnival Cruise Line. In this capacity, Phillips will oversee shoreside and shipboard human resources for the world’s largest cruise line, including talent acquisition, talent management, leadership development, human capital planning, employee engagement, compensation and benefits, and performance management. Phillips begins his new role effective October 19 and will report to Carnival President Christine Duffy. Phillips has nearly 20 years of HR experience, most recently serving as Chief Human Resources Officer for New York Presbyterian Hospital, which encompasses seven major hospitals, 23,000 employees and 6,000 affiliated physicians.

Halliburton, Baker Hughes Extend DoJ Review Date for Deal

Halliburton Co and Baker Hughes Inc have agreed with the U.S. Department of Justice to extend the date of the department's review of Halliburton's acquisition of Baker Hughes, a deal that would create an oilfield services behemoth. Halliburton has also proposed to "divest additional businesses of the companies" to get regulatory nod for the deal globally, the companies said on Friday. Several big deals, including Comcast Corp's $45 billion offer for Time Warner Cable Inc, have been scuttled in recent months amid indications that they would be blocked by antitrust regulators. Halliburton's $35-billion offer for Baker Hughes is being scrutinized by regulators in several countries as the companies have overlapping businesses in the United States, Asia and Europe.

Admiral Paul Zukunft, the new U.S. Coast Guard Commandant, could fill the BWT leadership void. Global efforts to combat the spread of invasive species in ballast water are hampered by a leadership void so serious that in April the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) discouraged further ratifications of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) invasive species convention. Admiral Paul Zukunft, the new U.S. Coast Guard Commandant, could fill that void and get those efforts onto the right track. The United States has been blessed with strong Coast Guard Commandants.

America's Cup World Series Begins in San Francisco

The America’s Cup World Series, San Francisco, is part of what is being billed as the busiest week of events in the city’s history. “We have a challenging program this week,” said regatta director Iain Murray. “We’re working with Fleet Week, so most of our racing will be later in the day. On Super Sunday we’ll be participating in the air show with Fleet Week. The air show will start and then stop, we’ll sail our Super Sunday fleet race (scheduled to start at 1:55 pm PDT), and then the air show will resume.

Annual Maritime Dinner Dance

On Friday, December 5, 2008, The Chesapeake Chapter of the USMAA-AF will host the dinner and dance, “MARAD – Promoting Our U.S. The Guest of Honor and Featured Speaker will be the Honorable Sean T. Connaughton (KP ’83), Maritime Administrator, Department of Transportation, U.S. Maritime Administration. Connaughton is expected to be nominated to be Commissioner of the Federal Maritime Commission and upon appointment designate Chairman, for the remainder of a five-year term expiring 06/30/12.

Battleship New Jersey Appoints New Trustees

The Home Port Alliance for the USS New Jersey, America's most decorated battleship, together with Troy Collins, CEO of the Battleship New Jersey Museum & Memorial, announce the appointment of six new members to the Board of Trustees. Co-chaired by John Matheussen, CEO of the Delaware River Port Authority and Patricia Egan Jones, Camden County Surrogate, the Board, established in 1998 to facilitate the Battleship's return to its permanent berth on the Delaware River's Camden Waterfront across from Center City Philadelphia, has spearheaded the ship's massive restoration and new life as a living, breathing history classroom and signature waterfront attraction for veterans, patriots, families and students from around the world.
