Mass. Maritime responds to industry demand, reloads with cutting edge Transas equipment, and moves to the head of the brown water training queue. It was a dark and stormy night with choppy seas. I didn’t hit anything, but I did run aground twice while at the helm of the tug boat simulator at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) in Buzzards Bay. But then that’s the point – to let students safely make mistakes and get the closest thing to the real-life experience they need – and would have a limited shot at otherwise on the equipment they’ll be handling where the jobs are today…

USCG Names First Sentinel-Class Cutter

Coast Guard officials announced Friday that the first Sentinel-class cutter will bear the name Bernard C. Webber in honor of the legendary Coast Guard member. Previously designated to be named the Coast Guard Cutter Sentinel, the cutter Bernard C. Webber will be the first of the service’s new 153-ft patrol cutters. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen approved the change of the cutter’s name to allow this class of vessels to be named after outstanding enlisted members who demonstrated exceptional heroism in the line of duty.

House Passes CG Acquisition Reform Bill

On July 29, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, joined his colleagues in unanimously passing H.R. 1665, the Coast Guard Acquisition Reform Act of 2009—legislation that Congressman Cummings introduced to build on the Coast Guard’s acquisition reform efforts and ensure accountability in the use of taxpayer dollars. “As families across our nation continue to lose their jobs, their homes, their savings, and their dreams, it is more critical than ever to ensure that their tax dollars are being used in the most effective and efficient way possible,” Congressman Cummings said.

Annual Harbor Safety Committee Conference

The U.S. Coast Guard's Office of Waterways Management is sponsoring the 11th Annual Harbor Safety Committee Conference in Tampa, Fla., at the Marriott Tampa Waterside Hotel May 27-29. The event aims to bring together dozens of harbor safety committees from around the country to continue improving communication, collaboration and coordination among policy makers, transportation planners, shippers and others in the maritime industry. The deadline for registration is April 15. Invited speakers include Rep. CG Comments on Purchasing Authority

Cantwell, Cummings, Snowe Express Concern Over DD-250

Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Chairwoman and Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, and Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, sent a letter to Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen expressing concern over the Coast Guard’s preliminary acceptance of the National Security Cutter BERTHOLF before many of the ship’s problems have been adequately fixed (text of the letter below).Last month, the U.S. Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) conducted a thorough assessment of the ship, and recommended that the Coast Guard delay acceptance until eight serious, “starred” deficiencies were addressed.

Cummings, Allen Address Coast Guard Academy

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, was joined by United States Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen in addressing the student body, faculty, and staff of the Coast Guard Academy in response to the placement of nooses in the bag of a student and the office of an officer conducting diversity training (copy of speech attached). “These cadets are a group of extraordinary young men and women who represent the very best of the best,” Congressman Cummings said. Coast Guard Asked to Address Racial Intolerance

Following the discovery of two nooses placed among the personal effects of a student and officer at the United States Coast Guard Academy, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, called upon Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen to address the full Academy and thoroughly investigate the incidents. The Academy announced that it will be expanding training on race relations following the discovery of the nooses—one found in the bag of an African-American cadet, and the second in the office of a white female officer who led training on race relations in response to the first incident. Congressman Cummings has applauded the training but feels it is not enough.

Ceremony Set for Joint Harbor Operations Center

Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Deputy Commissioner Jayson Ahern, U.S. Navy Commander Submarine Group Trident, Rear Admiral Frank Drennan, and other dignitaries will be in attendance Wednesday at 10 a.m. for the Coast Guard Joint Harbor Operation Center (JHOC) ribbon cutting ceremony at Pier 36 here. The ceremony recognizes officially the operation of the JHOC. The JHOC is the home for Sector Seattle's Command Center, Communications Center and Vessel Traffic Center. CCG-USCG Summit to be Held

The US Coast Guard said that the second annual Canada-U.S. Coast Guard summit is being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The summit, attended by Canadian Coast Guard Commissioner George Da Pont and US Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen will discuss issues of mutual interest surrounding maritime safety and security matters. Foss Maritime Honored

Captain Sam Nelson and crew of the Foss Maritime Company tugboat Justine Foss received the Lifesaving Award from the Seamen's Church Institute at their annual Silver Bell Dinner on June 1 in New York. United States Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen was in attendance and personally congratulated Captain Nelson. Captain Nelson and his crew received the award for their heroic efforts in response to the needs of the crew of the tugboat Valour and the barge M-192 while in heavy weather and rough seas on January 18, 2006 off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Capt. Nelson and his crew, through their seamanship skills, were able to rescue five men from the water and regain control of the laden tank barge during darkness and severe sea conditions…
