Today in U.S. Naval History - September 13   1814 - British bombardment of Fort McHenry inspires the Star Spangled Banner.   1847 - Marine Brigade leads U.S. forces that storm Chapultepec Castle near Mexico City, inspiring one line of the Marine Hymn   1906 - Sailors and Marines from USS Denver land in Havana at the request of the Cuban government to preserve order during a revolution.    1939 - Navy suspends transfers to the Fleet Reserve after 20 years service and retains men on active duty.   1985 - Commander Middle East Force orders escort of Military Sealift Ships in Persian Gulf because of Iranian seizure of merchant vessels.

USS Yorktown Returns to Pascagoula, Completes Final Deployment

USS Yorktown (CG 48) will return home to Naval Station Pascagoula Aug. 17, after a successful six-month deployment with the USS Wasp (LHD 1) Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 2. Yorktown made key contributions to Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Market Time II in support of the global war on terrorism. The ship, with embarked Helicopter Squadron Light (HSL) 42 Det. 2 from Mayport, Fla., set sail Feb. 17 from Pascagoula, and rendezvoused with the rest of the strike group off the coast of North Carolina three days later.

U.S., Coalition Vessels Conduct MSO in Arabian Sea

The Commander and staff of U.S. Navy Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 50 embarked HNLMS Amsterdam (A 836) April 7, joining USS Typhoon (PC5), and U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Wrangell (WPB 1332) in the Arabian Sea to conduct maritime security operations (MSO) in support of Combined Task Force (CTF) 150. MSO set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material. "It's important to demonstrate that where you're from doesn't matter," said Cmdr. Georges van Aalst, Amsterdam’s commanding officer. Amsterdam is acting as flagship for Capt.
