USS South Dakota was officially commissioned in Groton, Connecticut. With the sound of a horn, South Dakota’s naval legacy entered a new chapter. Rear Adm. Joe Tofalo will take command of Submarine Forces, a post that comes with a third star and oversees the submarine force's manning, gear and training. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced that the president has made the following nomination: "Navy Rear Adm. Joseph E. Tofalo, for appointment to the rank of vice admiral and for assignment as commander, Naval Submarine Forces; commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; and commander, Allied Submarine Command, Norfolk, Virginia. The nomination is the latest in a string of new assignments at the top rungs of the nuclear Navy. Adm. John Richardson, the head of Naval Reactors, has been nominated to be the next chief of naval operations; a new NR boss hadn't been named as of May 20.

BAE Systems has named Joseph Campbell as vice president and general manager of the company’s Ship Repair business, effective Jan. 14. Campbell succeeds Bill Clifford, who will retire after a successful 46-year career in the U.S. Navy and the private sector. Campbell will be responsible for leading the strategy, operations and financial and business performance of Ship Repair, including the commercial shipbuilding operations. He previously served as vice president and director at American Systems Corporation, where he was responsible for undersea warfare and naval combatant programs.

Virginia-class attack submarine USS New Mexico (SSN 779) and Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Hampton (SSN 767) have commenced Ice Exercise 2014 (ICEX 2014) in the Arctic Ocean, says Commander,  US Submarine Forces. "In keeping with the Department of Defense's Arctic Objectives, the Submarine Force uses Ice Exercises to prepare for a wide range of challenges and contingencies," said Capt. Paul Whitescarver, the camp's officer in tactical command and operations officer at Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic.

An intensive three week submarine escape and rescue exercise has drawn to a close off the east coast of Australia. During Exercise BLACK CARILLON 2013, members of Navy’'s Submarine Force simulated being evacuated from HMAS Farncomb, which was bottomed in 112 metres of water, in the James Fisher Rescue Service LR5 submersible. The 21.5 tonne submersible was then lifted onto the deck of a rescue vessel, where its passengers were transferred into decompression chambers without being exposed to the outside air pressure.

The Naval Sea Systems Command announced the selection of Rear Adm. (sel.) Gregory R. Thomas as the next commander of Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY). He is currently serving as the commander of Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY&IMF). Capt. Brian Osgood has been selected as the next commander of PHNSY&IMF. Rear Adm. (sel.) Thomas will be responsible for overseeing a business base of submarines, carriers, ships and intermediate level maintenance at NNSY and will be the 104th shipyard commander of NNSY. Capt. Osgood is currently serving as Maritime Readiness Branch Head on the OPNAV N43 staff. Capt. Osgood will become Pearl's 45th shipyard commander. Thomas is a native of Portsmouth, Va.

USS Tucson (SSN 770) returned to Naval Station Pearl Harbor Monday, Dec. 15, following a 23-month absence that included a modernization period in Norfolk, numerous sea trials and a port visit in San Diego. "Everybody is happy to be back in Pearl Harbor," said Cmdr. Paul Spear, USS Tucson commanding officer. The submarine just completed a major overhaul in Norfolk. "Tucson has a new fire control system and a totally refurbished engine room as well as a lot of new gear on board," said Ensign John Chester Jr., Tucson junior officer.

The commander of Submarine Force, U.S Pacific Fleet (SUBPAC) announced on Dec. 4 that USS Hawaii (SSN 776) will be the first Virginia-class submarine to be homeported at Naval Station Pearl Harbor this summer. "SUBPAC is thrilled to be welcoming the most technologically advanced submarine in the U.S. inventory to our ohana," said Rear Adm. Douglas McAneny, commander, Submarine Force U.S. Commissioned May 5, 2007, Hawaii was the third Virginia-class attack submarine constructed and the first submarine to be named after the island state.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has named Paul F. Sullivan vice president of operations for its Naval and Marine Systems Division (N&MSD) at the company's Electronic Systems sector, effective immediately. In his new position, Sullivan will have executive responsibility for all phases of the division's Department of Defense and Homeland Security programs, along with division responsibility for strategy development, customer engagement, and Navy-related program execution. He will also oversee N&MSD's restricted programs and cross-company collaboration.

The Virginia-class attack submarine USS Missouri (SSN 780) reached her first major milestone Sept. 27, during her keel authentication ceremony held at the General Dynamics Electric Boat facility in North Kingstown. Caesar S. DeSanto Sr. welded the initials of Rebecca W. Gates onto a plate of steel to symbolize the authentication of the keel. Gates, the wife of Secretary of Defense, Robert M. The Los Angeles class fast-attack submarine USS Norfolk (SSN 714) departed Naval Station Norfolk's Pier 3 Dec. 28, beginning a regularly scheduled six-month independent deployment. Norfolk will deploy to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Cmdr. Troy Jackson, Norfolk's commanding officer, said his crew is ready for every mission they are given. "The crew is fired up and ready to go," said Jackson. "They've worked very hard over the past several months. They've put in a lot of hard work and effort. We've also received a lot of support from our parent squadron (Commander Submarine Squadron 6), our maintenance organization, and we also received a lot of support during our recent stay in Groton. Norfolk is deploying independently, without a carrier or expeditionary strike group.

The Navy’s newest attack submarine, North Carolina, will be christened Saturday, April 21, during an 11 a.m. EDT ceremony at Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipyard, Newport News, Va. The fourth submarine of the Virginia class, SSN 777 will bear the name North Carolina to honor the Tar Heel State. The submarine will be the fourth ship of the U.S. Navy to bear the name North Carolina. The first was a 74-gun ship-of-the-line that served from 1820 to 1836. The second North Carolina was a Tennessee-class armored cruiser that was also built at the Newport News shipyard and served from 1908 to 1921. The third North Carolina was the first of the Navy's modern battleships, serving from 1940 to 1947, earning 12 battle stars for service during World War II.

U.S. Experts at the Naval Historical Center in Washington, D.C., have confirmed that a World War II submarine wreck found in the Gulf of Thailand last year is USS Lagarto (SS 371). Underwater archeologists at the center completed their examination of evidence obtained in June by Navy divers from USS Salvor (ARS 52) and Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 1, both based in Pearl Harbor. "We now know for certain that this is Lagarto," said Rear Adm. Jeffrey Cassias, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet submarine force.

The Navy’s oldest active attack submarine, USS Los Angeles (SSN 688), held a ceremony to mark its 30th birthday Nov. 13, on the pier at Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Cmdr. Erik Burian, Los Angeles commanding officer, cut the celebratory cake during the festivities, which included an awards ceremony and a barbecue on the pier for the crew and their families. The lead ship of her class, Los Angeles was commissioned Nov. 13, 1976. Since then, 47 more submarines have been commissioned in the class. The Los Angeles-class submarines incorporated improved sound quieting and a larger propulsion plant than previous classes and is capable of performing undersea and surface warfare, mining operations, special forces delivery, reconnaissance, carrier strike group support and intelligence collection.

Seven personnel practiced locking out from the attack submarine USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) and ascending to the surface wearing special suits that are designed to enable a free ascent from a stricken submarine Dec. 2 during ESCAPEX at the Navy’s Southeast Alaska Acoustic Measurement Facility in Ketchikan, Alaska. While several foreign navies practice the maneuver routinely, the U.S. Navy had not conducted it in more than three decades, and never from a nuclear-powered submarine.
