REMPEC Conducts Workshop on Ship-Source Air Pollution
The Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), the International Maritime Organization (IMO) -administered centre in the Mediterranean, conducted a regional workshop to identify and address ship-source air pollution in the Mediterranean last week."Political, legal and technical obstacles can sometimes challenge ratification and subsequently the effective implementation of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI air pollution and energy efficiency regulations," said a press release from IMO.Participants from 16 Mediterranean coastal States (including six which have not yet ratified MARPOL Annex VI)…

BIMCO Tackle Shipping Issues at Singapore Meeting
BIMCO’s Documentary Committee, chaired by Mr Karel Stes, gathered in Singapore for its spring meeting on 23 April. The Committee’s contract experts reviewed a number of new contracts and clauses dealing with a wide variety of topical subjects ranging from wind farms to solid bulk cargoes that can liquefy. A new standard pooling agreement was adopted following two and half years of development work. Also adopted by the Committee were three new standard clauses covering EU advanced cargo declaration requirements under voyage charter parties; slow steaming under a voyage charter; and a clause addressing the very topical issue of solid bulk cargoes that liquefy.
International Standards on Transport of Dangerous Goods

IMO Will Focus on Security Issues at the MSC
Security issues to fore at IMO safety meeting Maritime security issues are high on the agenda of IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC), which meets for its 75th session from May 15 to 24 , as Member States prepare for a Diplomatic Conference on Maritime Security scheduled for December 2002, at which any new or amended legislation could be adopted. Other major issues to be tackled include the adoption of proposed amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, as amended; ongoing work on the safety of bulk carrier ships and large passenger vessels; implementation of the revised STCW Convention; and the adoption of new and amended ships routeing measures.
