General Dynamics Bags $ 50 mi Submarine Contracts

MarineNews spoke with Dean Rosenberg, CEO of PortVision, about the company’s role in the coordination of the Deepwater Horizon spill response in the Gulf of Mexico. PortVision is a web-based service that uses data from the Automated Identification System (AIS), mandated by the IMO and the U.S. Coast Guard, to provide shore-side users with real-time vessel tracking as well as historical reporting. “The main purpose for AIS, why it was mandated, is for collision avoidance,” Rosenberg said.

Hatteland Agreement with Offshore Systems

Hatteland Display announced it has entered into a Long Term Cooperation Agreement with Offshore Systems, Ltd., of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. Under the terms of this contract, Hatteland Display will supply products from its broad portfolio of type-approved, commercial maritime and military-qualified displays for integration into Offshore Systems' ECPINS Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS, WECDIS) for navigation and situational awareness, and Common Operational Picture (COP) products that focus on the global situational awareness market in C3I applications. Among the products selected for use by Offshore Systems is Hatteland Display's new JH 22T11 MMD display, which is part of the proven Series 1 product family.

USS Blue Ridge Gets Comms Upgrade

Months of planning to create the Navy's most sophisticated at-sea communications platform went on-line Oct. 10 aboard amphibious flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) to provide Commander, 7th Fleet and his staff with increased command and control capabilities. According to Lt. Cmdr. Mark Baehr, the flagship's communications information systems officer, the estimated $3.5m project was necessary to upgrade the aging hardware and dated software to keep up with the ever changing world of technology.

OSI Awarded Contract by L-3

Offshore Systems International Ltd. (OSI) announced it has been awarded by L-3 Communications Marine Systems a contract valued at approximately $1.8m for the development and integration of its Common Operational Picture product for a U.S. Navy program. "With today's award, we achieve an important milestone in the company's history and deliver on a key strategic goal for 2006 - a significant U.S. Navy contract," said Ken Kirkpatrick, president and CEO of OSI. "This development demonstrates our ability to gain meaningful access to the U.S. defense market, which was a key factor in our two U.S.-based acquisitions done last year. We believe today's award opens the door to many future opportunities with the U.S.

The Coast Guard's Integrated Deepwater System

President Bush's visit with Coast Guard units in the Port of Philadelphia, Pa., in March placed a well-deserved spotlight on their critical role safeguarding the nation's maritime homeland security. Funding increases to the Coast Guard's budget over the past two years have significantly improved the service's current operational posture and readiness. At home, Coast Guard units have been working side-by-side with other agencies in the Department of Homeland Security to ensure the safety of U.S. ports, waterways, and coastal regions. Operational excellence also characterizes operations in the Coast Guard's other traditional missions. Illegal drug seizures during 2002, for example, ranked as the third largest in history.
