WinGD to Supply Methanol-fueled Engines for Six New Containerships

Swiss marine power company WinGD announced it will supply X-DF-M methanol-fueled engines for a series of six container vessels to be built at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China. The 9,000 TEU vessels will each be powered by an X82DF-M engine built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD), to be delivered in August 2025. The new vessel series will enter service in 2026 and 2027.The new order, which includes options for further engines, expands WinGD's methanol engine orders into the 82-bore size.

Windcat CTV is World's First Powered by Dual-fuel Hydrogen Engines

The world's first dual-fuel hydrogen- and diesel-powered crew transfer vessel (CTV) is ready for service, outfitted to run the cleaner fuel that reduces up to 80% of its traditional fuel usage and associated emissions.The 25-meter vessel, Hydrocat 48—owned by Windcat Workboats, part of Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB)—is based on the Windcat MK 3.5 design but lengthened to integrate adequate hydrogen storage on board. The vessel, which has been certified by Lloyd’s Register and U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency, recently completed bunkering and sea trials in May.

Retrofit Solution for LSF Engines

Chinese shipbuilding conglomerate China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) said that its worldwide equipment service subsidiary CSSC Marine Service Co (CMS) is using its expanded network of service stations to deliver a retrofit solution to engine starting problems that may occur with less viscous low-sulfur fuels (LSF).Some two-stroke engines using common-rail injection report problems reaching and maintaining high enough fuel rail pressure due to wear of fuel pumps, starting air problems or leaking injection control units.The concern is amplified when using fuels that are lighter and less viscous than heavy fuel oil, such as many of the very low sulfur fuel oil blends ship owners are likely to use to comply with IMO’s sulfur cap from 1 January 2020.

MAN Launches 800 hp Light-Duty Workboat Engine

The MAN D2676 LE426 will be available in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. It fulfils the latest US EPA Tier 3 Commercial standard and comes with keel cooling.MAN Engines is expanding its range of engines for light-duty workboats in North America by introducing an 800 hp (588 kW) inline-six engine. The D2676 LE426 will be available from the second quarter of 2020. It satisfies the EPA Commercial emissions standards and offers 70 hp greater output than the well-established, 730 hp D2676 model.

MAN Notches Multiple Cruise Orders

MAN Energy Solutions says its cruise business is experiencing a record order-intake. In the first eight months of 2018, the company has won orders to supply seven new cruise ships with engines plus exhaust-gas-treatment systems for scheduled delivery from the end of 2019 to 2022.The orders, which are cumulatively valued close to a three-digit million euro figure, total almost 300 MW of installed power for cruise ships ranging in size from 50,000 to approximately 140,000 gross tons…

MAN Introduces the 'Game Changer'

What would Rudolf Diesel say if he could see and compare his engine versus todays’ newest diesel engine development from MAN Diesel & Turbo? As the Augsburg based engine maker claims, “A cylinder output of 1,300 kW this engine puts us to the top.” The largest version of the new engines is a 20-cylinder unit (20V45/60) comes with a limit-pushing power output of 26 MW. The new MAN 45/60CR range is a striking combination of top performance, operational flexibility and reliability.

MAN Unveils Its New Flagship Engine

MAN has revealed the successor to its 48/60CR engine in the company’s 4x line of high-performance diesel engines. The MAN 45/60CR marine diesel engine will initially be available as 12V and 14V versions that boast power outputs, of 15,600 and 18,200 kW respectively, with inline versions following at a later stage. MAN Engines for Three New Cruise Ships

MAN Diesel & Turbo said it has won the engine-supply contract from Fincantieri for newbuildings ordered by Costa Asia and P&O Cruises, Australia, members of Carnival Corporation & plc. Each vessel will feature 2 × 14V48/60CR + 3 × 8L48/60CR medium-speed MAN engines, providing 62,400 kW installed power. The engines will be delivered to Fincantieri’s shipyards in Monfalcone (Trieste) and Marghera (Venice) between August 2017 and September 2019. Each newbuilding will weigh 133,500 gt, have a length of 323 m, a passenger capacity of 4,000, and carry a crew of 1,450 personnel.

First MAN D2676 Workboat Engine Ready for Launch

Last December, MAN Engines introduced its latest generation in-line six-cylinder engines for workboats. Now the first MAN D2676 LE443 engine off the production line will be installed aboard the new salmon fishing boat, LT32 Gilnetter, built by the Mavrik Marine boatyard in Washington State and set to launch in late autumn 2016. The D2676 LE443 is designed for light duty commercial operation and generates an output of 537 kW (730 HP) at 2,300 rpm with a cylinder capacity of 12.4 l. The maximum torque is 2,445 Nm at speeds of 1,300 to 2,100 rpm.

MAN Diesel & Turbo Inks Deal with Japan’s JFE

Japanese engine manufacturer JFE has entered a new cooperation agreement with MAN Diesel & Turbo for MAN's 32/44CR, 35/44DF, 48/60CR and 51/60DF modern four-stroke engine types. The agreement applies to marine newbuild projects for ships to be deployed on Japanese domestic trade routes, and where the shipyards and shipowners involved are located in Japan. JFE has produced and supplied medium-speed diesel engines since 1964 under the SEMT Pielstick license, which was acquired by the MAN Group back in 2006.

Glycerin Powers into the Propulsion Picture

Maine Maritime Academy Receives a $1.4 Million U.S. DOT Research Grant to Develop a Marine Engine Testing and Emissions Laboratory. The Marine Engine Testing and Emissions Laboratory (METEL) at Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) is working on several initiatives to implement viable emissions reduction technologies for the marine industry. Funded by a $2.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the METEL laboratory was developed to address environmental sustainability needs in transportation. Working with a Maine startup company, Sea Change Group LLC (SCG), the METEL team is helping to develop and implement a fuel that combines glycerin with diesel fuel to lower both operating cost and emissions for marine diesel engines.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems inform that a total of 50,000 Common Rail injection pumps have come off the conveyor belt at L’Orange GmbH in Glatten since 1997. The manufacturer of injection systems for internal combustion engines is generally acknowledged to have pioneered the Common Rail - a technology that raised fuel combustion efficiency and lowered emissions. Back in 1997, L’Orange became the first supplier worldwide to develop a series-production Common Rail pump for diesel and heavy-oil engines.

New Carnival Cruise Ship to be Powered by MAN Diesel & Turbo

MAN Diesel & Turbo has won an order from Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines to supply five medium-speed 48/60CR engines to power its next-generation diesel-electric propulsion cruise liner which is to be built by Fincantieri. With a gross tonnage of about 133,500 tons and a passenger capacity of about 5,000, the ship will be the largest vessel in the Carnival Cruise Lines' fleet. Its construction represents the introduction of a brand new class of ship that will be powered by five MAN Tier-II-type engines – 2 × 14V48/60CR + 3 × 8L48/60CR types – capable of delivering 62,400 kW.

Meyer Werft Orders More MAN Diesel & Turbo Power

MAN Diesel & Turbo has won the order from Meyer Werft for new cruise vessels for Norwegian Cruise Line to supply its V48/60CR engines with diesel-electric propulsion systems. The ships will be built at Meyer Werft, the cruise liner specialist builder in Papenburg, northern Germany. Norwegian is a longstanding customer of MAN Diesel & Turbo with almost its entire fleet powered by the 48/60 and 58/64 engine types. The new ships, accorded the project name Breakaway Plus, will be the largest in Norwegian’s fleet.

MAN Engines to Power Italian Luxury Cruise Ships

MAN Diesel & Turbo is to supply eight engines for the diesel-electric propulsion of two cruise ship newbuildings to Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. The company is delivering the engines in cooperation with Alfa Laval who will supply accompanying exhaust-gas-treatment systems (PureSOx) for sulphur-oxide removal. Each cruise ship will be powered by two MAN 9L32/44CR and two MAN 12V32/44CR engines, providing a combined output of 23,520 kW in a diesel-electric propulsion arrangement.

Exhibitions are traditional launching points for major equipment makers, and Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is no exception. Wärtsilä's Powers Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas

Allure of the Seas, the sister ship of Oasis of the Seas, has been handed over to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL) by STX Europe's shipyard in Turku, Finland. The 361 meter long ultra modern vessel is powered by six Wärtsilä 46 engines, including three 12-cylinder and three 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 46 engines in V-configuration, and Wärtsilä 7500-horsepower bow thrusters with a combined power output of some 20 MW that make the vessel easy to manoeuvre. Over the decades, Royal Caribbean International has had several of the world's most innovative ships in its fleet…

MTU 1163 Series Meets IMO 2 & 3 Emissions Standards

MTU Upgrades Series 1163 for IMO Standards

New MAN Four-stroke Diesel Premières at SMM 2012

Dual-fuel marine diesel engine newcomer L35/44DF offers full flexibiltiy. MAN Diesel & Turbo introduce its L35/44DF engine, the latest addition to its four-stroke portfolio. Spurred on by developments in environmental legislation and the strict  emission limits resulting from that, the new engine offers dual diesel fuel-gas running and can also be introduced as a retrofit to engines already in service. The first prototype entered its test phase at the beginning of 2012’s second quarter at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Augsburg facility. A V-type engine version is being developed simultaneously that will enlarge the power-output range of the company’s dual-fuel engine portfolio as part of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s market strategy.
