It's nearly 45 years since the tragedy on the ANCO Duke where seven crew died at the bottom of the tank they were cleaning. ā€œI was working on chemical tankers then. All the crew felt this terrible loss of life and took on tank entries with a heightened safety focus,ā€ says Captain Dave Watkins, Deputy Director of the confidential near-miss reporting service CHIRP Maritime. Since then, enclosed space deaths still occur, although not in the number they did.Watkins has years of experience on chemical and VLCC tankers as an officer and masterā€¦

Project Cargo and Heavy Lifts in the COVID-19 Environment

Ā© halberg/AdobeStock

The year 2020 has presented a litany of challenges to the safe movement of global project cargo. While heavy lifts and engineered cargo movements always present challenges from a rigging and execution standpoint, we have also faced exceptional challenges on other fronts. These have included cancelled vessel bookings, port facilities as well as prefabrication/modulization yard closures, lack of vessel and facility access as well as travel restrictions. At Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS)ā€¦

Tech File: Automating Ballast Ops When Installing BWMS

Image: W&O/EMI

Installing ballast water treatment systems to comply with new regulations will require owners to automate ballast operations on board their vessels or barges. Retrofitting ballast water treatment systems generally requires modifications to the existing ballast systems. Many older vessels have remote operated valves, but no automation of the ballast system. EMI has been working with parent company W&O to provide blue water barges with innovative solutions to add automation functionality to their fleet.

The USCG RDC & Electronic Aids To Navigation

Ā© Rob Bouwman/Adobe Stock

To recreational boaters, Aids to Navigation (ATON) are the familiar red and green buoys (and day markers) that line our inland waterways. What they might not be aware of is that buoys have been around since the days of the Roman and Egyptian empires. In the decades following the creation of our country, buoys in every shape and color began appearing in our waterways. It wasnā€™t until 1850 that Congress harmonized their deployment, thereby encouraging the familiar ā€œRed, Right, Returningā€ mantra.

Vessel Automation: Command & Control

The marine industry is becoming increasingly competitive, with many looking to lower transportation costs while demanding the highest environmental and safety standards. Automating vessel operations and systems can significantly improve a vessel ownerā€™s competitive edge in the market, by reducing staffing requirements, improving asset management, maintenance costs and minimizing risk of environmental incidents due to human error. On a ship, there are many parameters that needs to be controlled or monitored including: temperatureā€¦

Kongsberg Seatex Introduces Two New Motion Reference Units

Kongsberg Seatex, Kongsberg Maritimeā€™s position reference specialist division, is launching two new Motion Reference Units (MRU). Both products have been designed specifically for survey and crane operations, and outside installations, such as heli-deck monitoring. The new MRU 3 is designed for roll, pitch and heave compensation applications, including real-time heave compensation of echo sounders during survey operations and active heave compensation of offshore cranes. It provides heave measurements to meet IHO standards, ensuring that echo sounder data is highly accurate pre- and post-processing, while offshore crane safety and efficiency can be also be improved. The MRU 3 achieves reliability by using solid state sensors with no rotational or mechanical parts.

SpecTec Launches AMOS Replicator

One of the main issues when dealing with remote Databases, is the replication of data from the remote site to the office site. SpecTec has always been extremely specialized in Replicating Databases, and was the first one to invent a methodology which would replicate only data which had changed, while most competitors would replicate entire data files. With time and with the advent of SQL Databases, Data Replication has become a hot issue: we needed to allocate maximum local flexibility while allowing Data integrity to be maintained.

OSIL Launch New Data To Web System

Falcon Data to Web Logger

The Falcon (standalone), and Falconet (integrated) Data to Web system provides a low-cost and flexible solution to transmit, store, host and present data from all common sensors to a dedicated website in real time. The new system can communicate using GPRS, GSM, radio or satellite, can be coupled to almost any sensor, and can be retrofitted to existing platforms. Data is presented on a dedicated website with a password access, using secure servers, and can interface with existing data gatherer and SCADA systems. Multiple sites can be displayed on one screen, with inputs from multiple sensors.

HMI Monitoring and Control - Building Blocks of a SCADA System

User interface is the most visible system component when it comes to equipment operation. From the steering wheel and instrument cluster on your vehicleā€™s dashboard to the most complex industrial control system, the purpose is the same; it must allow human interface into a system. The interface must provide the user a means to control the equipment, provide feedback from the equipment to show operational conditions and alert us when something is wrong. And it should do these things efficiently, be easy to use, and visually and ergonomically pleasing.

International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code

Closely associated with the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA) is the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code enacted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Implementation of the ISPS code will provide a comprehensive framework for global maritime security while facilitating the flow of commerce through the maritime transportation system. The 108 countries that comprise the IMO, including the U.S., adopted the ISPS code in December of 2002. The code, along with amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, sets forth several functional requirements to achieve maritime security.
