Warner to Head Inmarsat Maritime Marketing

Inmarsat has appointed Mark Warner as Head of Marketing Communications for its Maritime business unit. Reporting to Inmarsat Chief Marketing Officer Chris McLaughlin, Warner will take responsibility for maritime marketing communications activities, with the objective of opening up the full potential of high-speed connectivity at sea across vertical markets including merchant shipping, small boat, fishing and leisure. Radio Holland Supplies Communications for Weir Complexes

Radio Holland’s Mission Critical Communications (MCC) department is responsible for the design, supply and commissioning of the communications system for the Nederrijn and Lek weir complex. This complex, consisting of three hydraulic structures, will be subjected to a major renovation. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure (Rijkswaterstaat) awarded the contract for this programme to Siemens in late 2015. Siemens had included the communications system designed by Radio Holland in its tender bid.

Marlink, Palantir Enter IT Services Partnership

Marlink and Palantir AS have signed a strategic partnership agreement that aims to improve access to IT services in the maritime industry. Palantir’s IT products complement Marlink parent company Airbus Defence and Space’s extensive AuroraGlobal multi-band (Ka-, Ku-, C and L-band) connectivity portfolio and value added solutions, which enable shipping companies to optimize communications and operations. Through the agreement, Palantir, a supplier of managed maritime IT products and services will support Marlink in taking increased responsibility for its customers’ IT systems on board.

PetroCom Introduces New Technology for Offshore Industry

Telenor Acquires Norse Technology Sat Business

Telenor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway, has purchased the satellite communications activities of Norse Technology AS and additionally has acquired the majority of stock in Norwegian-based Norse Electronics AS. With this purchase, Telenor Satellite Services intends to re-establish Norse Electronics AS as the leading integrator of communications services for the Oil & Offshore industry. The acquisition of Norse Electronics also serves to enhance Telenor Satellite Services’ capabilities to deliver complete communications packages and services for the Oil & Offshore market as well as the maritime transportation industry.

Proposed Regulations Regarding Source From Activities in Intl. Waters

The Internal Revenue Service (the "IRS") has issued proposed regulations under section 863 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended (the "Code"), providing new rules for determining the source of income from activities conducted in international waters for purposes of U.S. income taxation. These new regulations come shortly after the release last year of regulations under Section 883 of the Code that significantly affected the exemption from U.S. income tax of income from the international operation of a vessel owned by a non-U.S. corporation. While the new regulations also apply to space activities and similar new regulations apply to communication activities, the new rules may have the most significant impact on both U.S.
