Today at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, MSC Cruises officially took delivery of its new flagship MSC Seaside, the second newly-built vessel to come into service for the cruise line in 2017. The design of many DP vessels dates back to a time when there was limited understanding of how to make closed bus power plants fully fault tolerant. This resulted in a number of potentially costly incidents. This poor incident record eventually led to many operators preferring to operate with open bus-ties, especially for critical DP operations. In addition to cost and fuel efficiency burdens, open bus-ties can impose other restrictions on a vessel’s ability to carry out its industrial mission, often resulting in otherwise avoidable downtimes.

Ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist Optimarin has been chosen by Norwegian Car Carriers AS (NOCC) as the supplier of choice for its two newbuild vessels currently under construction at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in South Korea. Optimarin will provide 667m³/h capacity systems for the state-of-the-art 6500 car capacity Pure Car Truck Carrier (PCTC) sister ships, which are scheduled for delivery in late 2016 and early 2017. Optimarin CEO Tore Andersen says his firm’s established track record, in what is still a young industry, played a key role in securing this latest contract. “We’ve been exclusively focused on producing simple, reliable and flexible BWT solutions since our formation in 1994,” Andersen comments.

Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, FSG, was founded in 1872 by a group of five local ship owners who previously had all their steamboats built in England as most German ship owners did in the 19th century. The first ship, the iron tall ship Doris Brodersen, was delivered to one of the founding partners in 1875. The cargo steamer Septima was commissioned a year later. In 1892 a floating dock, with a capacity of 2,300 tons has been built. At the turn of the year 1900, more than 2c000 employees worked at FSG.

Tenneco (NYSE: TEN) has announced that it has introduced a complete urea dosing control, fluid handling and catalyst solution for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment, enabling large engines to meet EPA Tier IV and IMO Tier III regulations. The company will showcase the complete system at the 2014 WorkBoat Show in New Orleans, Dec. 3-5, 2014 (Booth #2152). The system is designed specifically for high-horsepower engines in the marine, stationary and locomotive markets, providing precise and reliable delivery of liquid urea.

Stena Bulk reports it is the first Swedish shipping company to join the World Ocean Council (WOC), a global organization that converges a diverse range of maritime operations to promote the sustainable use of the world’s oceans. The World Ocean Council encourages the business community to assume collective responsibility for the seas, and does not believe that a single company or industry can alone solve problems related to the Arctic, marine debris and ocean noise from tankers.

Caterpillar Marine launched the MaK M 25 E engine platform at SMM, an engine platform developed for state-of-the-art vessel designs with an emphasis on fuel savings. Key product features include optimized engine performance as well as an efficient part load range, which the manufacturer boasts can help to save up to 40 tons of fuel a year when operating vessels at variable engine speeds. Vessels typically operating at lower loads can save up to 60 tons of fuel per year by changing the operating mode from constant to variable engine speed.

Caterpillar Marine says it is due to unveil new power ratings for the Cat C175 propulsion engine for commercial vessels at the 2014 SMM Exhibition, currently underway in Hamburg, Germany. Designed specifically as a high speed power solution for commercial applications including ocean going and harbor tugs, the C175-16 propulsion engine is now available with ratings of 2239 bkW - 2550 bkW @ 1800 rpm. The new ratings extend Caterpillar Marine’s high-speed engine power range beyond the company’s already industry-leading 3516C HD engine. Cat C175 engine platforms with the new ratings are available to order now from the global Cat dealer network.

City councilors in South Portland, Maine, voted late Monday night to ban the loading of crude oil onto tankers along its waterfront, throwing up yet another roadblock to the export of Canadian oil sands crude and setting up a showdown with industry which called the process illegal. The city of 25,000, known for its scenic lighthouses and sweeping views of the island-speckled waters of Casco Bay, is also the east coast's second largest oil port, located at the southern terminus of the Portland-Montreal Pipeline, which currently flows north to Canada.

Foster Wheeler AG (Nasdaq:FWLT) announced today that a subsidiary of its Global Power Group has been awarded two contracts for the design and supply of five steam condensers and thirty feed-water heaters for Saline Water Conversion Corporation’s (SWCC) Yanbu Power and Desalination Plant, Phase 3, located in Saudi Arabia. The contracts were signed with a consortium led by Al-Toukhi Company for Industry, Trade and Construction (AT) for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the plant. Foster Wheeler will design and supply condensers and feed-water heaters for the five super critical boilers at the plant. Each unit requires a condenser as well as three high-pressure and three low-pressure feed-water heaters.

A Finland government owned investment company, Finnish Industry Investment Ltd, has today purchased a 66.4 per cent majority stake of the shares of Aker Arctic Technology Oy (Aker Arctic) from STX Finland Oy. Aker explain that In recent months the Ministry of Employment and the Economy has been studying actively the possibilities for securing the Company's know-how and further development in Finland. The transfer of the Company´s know-how, such as intellectual property rights, away from Finland, would have meant a serious setback for the entire Finnish Arctic marine industry's future development. Every year the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) produces an annual report of safety statistics (covering fatalities and injuries) supplied by members. “Safety statistics are a useful insight into the performance of a company and industry sector in the areas of health, safety and environment,” explains Hugh Williams, Chief Executive of IMCA.
