Indian private ports operator, Essar Ports Limited posted overall 17 percent growth in the cargo throughput at 13.5 million tonne for the first quarter of current fiscal ended 30 June 2019 as against 11.5 MT in the corresponding quarter last year."Higher capacity utilization at its recently commissioned terminals at Salaya and Vizag, and an increase in third-party cargo, were the two key factors that will help the Company achieve its target of handling 60 million tonnes of cargo by 31 March 2020," the Essar Group company said.Essar Ports' first quarter cargo handling performance has been very strong and brought it closer to achieving…

ExxonMobil has announced its new 40BN cylinder oil, Mobilgard 540, will be available from September 2, 2019. The lubricant has been specifically formulated for use with 0.50% sulphur fuels that comply with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2020 emission regulations and meets the requirements of OEMs, MAN ES and WinGD.Mobilgard 540 will be available from launch in major ports around the world including Hong Kong, Singapore, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. It will also be offered at additional locations through ExxonMobil’s delivery network, in bulk and in packs.

The fourth-largest port in the United States in total tonnage, Port of Corpus Christi has leased land where it hopes to build the nation's first export terminal to load very large crude carriers (VLCC).The Port of Corpus Christi Commission approved today a long-term (50-year) lease agreement with Lone Star Ports, a joint venture between the Carlyle Group and the Berry Group, for approximately 200 acres on Harbor Island to develop a state-of-the-art petroleum export terminal.Featuring the latest in safety, security and environmental technologies, the facility will connect U.S. crude producers with all major international markets.The lease…

The Dutch tank storage company Royal Vopak,  Groningen Seaports and Whitehelm Capital announce their intention to jointly invest in a 27 MW solar park. The solar photovoltaic field will be one of the largest currently in the Netherlands.The new solar park will be situated on 19 ha of land adjacent to Vopak Terminal Eemshaven, land which is currently already leased by the terminal. The produced green electricity will be made available for local use in Groningen and Vopak terminals.Based on the available energy infrastructure, Groningen and especially Eemshaven are considered strategic locations for production and storage of renewable energy in the Netherlands.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a Kalmar Care service agreement with Suomen Satamatekniikka, a subsidiary of Steveco, covering the maintenance and service of 16 Kalmar straddle carriers at the Port of Helsinki, Finland. The order was booked in Cargotec's 2017 fourth quarter order intake and the agreement comes into effect from the beginning of February 2018. Steveco, a leading port operator in Finland, employs approximately 850 people and has annual revenues of close to EUR 160 million. The company operates three ports in Finland - Mussalo and Hietanen in Kotka, and Vuosaari in Helsinki - which are optimally located with regard to the main cargo routes into and out of Finland and Russia.

GAC Russia said it is expanding eastwards with the opening of new branches at Nakhodka and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to meet demand for shipping services as opportunities open up in Far East. According to GAC Russia, this means it is the only ship agent with a presence throughout the interconnected Arctic region and Far East: at Murmansk, Kandalaksha, Sabetta, and now Nakhodka and the capital of the Sakhalin region, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Enrique K. Razon Jr., International Container Terminal Services Inc.(ICTSI) chairman and president, recently visited Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT), ICTSI’s subsidiary in the port of Umm Qasr, Iraq. Razon personally inspected the continuing upgrade works in Berth 20, the existing facility in Umm Qasr’s North Port where ICTSI started operations in November 2014. He also inspected the piling works taking place opposite ICTSI’s existing terminal where ICTSI is investing in the development of an entirely new state-of-the-art container/multi-purpose facility. Overall, ICTSI is committed to invest US$130 million to upgrade terminal facilities and capacity in order to meet the latest requirements of port users in the port of Umm Qasr.

The Lebanese American University has awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree in Humane Letters to Jacques R. Saadé, in recognition of his achievements as a great business leader. The South African company Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has named its 750m3 grab hopper dredger, Italeni, during a special ceremony hosted by the shipbuilder IHC Merwede. The ceremony was performed on June 18 by TNPA’s Supply Chain General Manager, Ncumisa Nkanunu, in the shipyard of IHC Merwede’s partner, MTG Dolphin, in Varna, Bulgaria. The contract for the design, construction and delivery of the grab hopper dredger was signed between TNPA and IHC Global Production, part of IHC Merwede, on January 29, 2013.

North America Western Asia Holdings (NAWAH) agrees to modernize Maqal Port, located in Basra’s urban center on the Shatt al Arab waterway. The formal agreement is between Iraq’s Ministry of Transportation, the General Company for the Ports of Iraq, and NAWAH. As part of the agreement, the American company will invest more than $14 million to bring both heavy-lift crane and container handling capabilities to the 93-year-old port. NAWAH will also build a modern container yard adjacent to the port’s berth 14. The company’s agreement with GCPI will extend 10 years. “The speed at which Iraq can rebuild and become prosperous is greatly dependent upon the capacity of its ports,” said Paul Brinkley, NAWAH’s president and CEO.

Every day, about 17,000 cargo containers enter U.S. ports, yet only one or two percent of them is routinely inspected.
