Ingalls to Close Gulfport Facility Due to Reduction in Navy Builds

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today the closure of its Gulfport Composite Center of Excellence in Gulfport, Miss. "This is a difficult but necessary decision," said HII President and CEO Mike Petters. "Due to the reduction in the Zumwalt-class (DDG 1000) ship construction and the recent U.S. Navy decision to use steel products on Lyndon B. Current work being performed at Gulfport is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2014, with closure expected by May 2014.

Berthing a Submarine

Berthing a fast attack or fleet ballistic missile (Trident) submarine requires skilled vessel handling, knowledge and practice. Marine Composites, Acoustic Materials on Display by Goodrich

Goodrich Corporation will display its advanced marine composite products and acoustic materials at the Navy League's annual Sea-Air-Space Exposition at National Harbor, Md. April 16-18. The exposition brings the U.S. defense industrial base, private-sector U.S. companies and key military decision makers together for an annual innovative, educational, professional and maritime-based event. Goodrich's Engineered Polymer Products (EPP) business in Jacksonville, Fla. delivered its 336th sonar dome rubber window (SDRW) to the U.S. Navy on Jan 9, 2012. EPP, part of Goodrich's Aerostructures business, has been the exclusive supplier of sonar domes to a variety of U.S. Navy and allied navy vessels for more than 40 years.

Geislinger Gets DNV Type Approval for Vdamp

Geislinger received type approval for its recently introduced Vdamp product range by the classification society Det Norske Veritas. It also facilitates the use of Geislinger Dampers in 2-stroke applications, where the Vdamp protects the propeller or camshaft from damage by torsional vibrations. In such applications the damper is a crucial safety element and has to be classified, contrary to 4-stroke engines, where this is in general not the case. Conoco and Aker Kvaerner To Establish DeepWater Composites

Conoco and Aker Kvaerner, part of Kvaerner, the international oil services, engineering and construction, pulp and paper and shipbuilding group, announced the establishment of a new company, DeepWater Composites AS, that will manufacture and sell composite products for use in the deepwater exploration and field development segments of the oil and gas industry. Conoco and Aker Kvaerner will each hold 50-percent interest in Deepwater Composites AS. Conoco and Aker Kvaerner have co-operated under a technology alliance since 1995 to develop, test and qualify two carbon fiber composite products that provide a technological and economic breakthrough to facilitate the exploitation of oil reserves in deep water.
