Sentinel Marine Expands Fleet

Offshore support vessel operator Sentinel Marine has introduced the newest fleet of emergency response and rescue vessels in the North Sea – and help clean up the offshore environment.All eight ships recently built to order by Sentinel Marine – and the four still under various stages of construction – have Tier 4 compliant engines which reduce emissions of particulate matter and noxious gases to near zero levels.Sentinel Marine chief executive officer Rory Deans said: “Tier 4 engines reduce emissions by around 86% compared to other types of engines used in the marine environment.“Our fleet is currently one of very few in the North Sea to utilise Tier 4 engines.

DP World Orders Kalmar Straddle Carriers

The cargo-handling solutions provider Kalmar is to supply DP World with a total of 63 Kalmar Hybrid Straddle Carriers for use at four of its European container terminals: 12 units will be delivered to GMP in Le Havre, France; 20 units to Eurofos in Marseille, France; 19 units to Antwerp Gateway in Belgium; and 12 units to DP World Southampton in the UK.The order was booked in Cargotec's 2019 Q1 order intake, and the majority of the machines is expected to be delivered by the end of 2019, said Kalmar, part of Cargotec.Kalmar and DP World, one of the world's leading operators of marine and inland terminals, have developed a highly successful partnership over many years of working together.

US Navy Puts Energy Initiatives on Display

The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) hosted the Senate Committee for Energy and Natural Resources and Chair of the Subcommittee on Water and Power, to discuss Navy and Marine Corps energy initiative programs. The committee members toured exhibits showcasing new green technologies which will help the military conserve energy and improve consumption efficiency. Each exhibit provided a glimpse of environmentally friendly equipment that will enhance operational, tactical and fuel efficiency which is critical to the today's military.

CG Urges Caution as Hurricane Bill Approaches

With Hurricane Bill expected to pass along the Atlantic coast this weekend, the Coast Guard is stressing the importance of safety for boaters and swimmers during the hurricane season. Hurricanes can create dangers in the water, such as rip currents and large waves. Rip currents and undertows can drag swimmers away from their boat or the beach and lead to death by drowning when they attempt to fight the current and become exhausted. According to the United States Lifesaving Association, rip currents cause approximately 100 deaths annually in the United States - more than all other natural hazards except heat and floods. More than 80 percent of rescues by beach lifeguards are due to rip currents, totaling 18,000 lifeguard rescues a year.

Secretary LaHood Addresses MTSNAC

Secretary LaHood for the Department of Transportation addressed the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Council on July 23, 2009. Consistent with America’s Marine Highway Program’s mandates to reduce congestion, conserve energy, and improve the environment, the Secretary charged the Council to better integrate the Marine Transportation System into the surface transportation system. By relocating freight from highways and urban corridors to commercial waterways (where applicable), the same system which provides the transportation of individuals and families in and between cities can provide a more efficient means to move goods to the shelves of retail stores throughout the United States.

Stena Line selects Bekaert to help conserve energy among its fleet of ships. With the installation of Bekaert advanced solar control window film, industry leader Stena Line minimizes fuel consumption, improves comfort for passengers and employees and significantly lowers air conditioning use. The savings based on the cost of air conditioning has been calculated to be approximately 247,000 kWh/year, which could equal fuel savings of 58 cubic meters/15,321 U.S. gallons for one ship. EPA – Cleaner Air Emissions from SI Ferries

A on the Staten Island ferry will not only be free, it will be clean - and that's just the beginning of a region-wide effort to clean up the ports in the Northeast, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Norfolk Naval Shipyard Wins Two Energy Awards
