Fumigation Doesn't Work for Some Ship Cargoes

The fumigation of grain cargoes using certain pesticides, namely plant protection products, may not be effective in controlling insect larvae, resulting in cargo damage or loss.Javier Quintero Saavedra, head of HSE at Terminales Marítimos de Galicia (TMGA), an operator of bulk terminals in Galicia, Spain, and Chairman, Dry Bulk Cargoes Working Group, ICHCA,  said: “We are finding that the pupae and larvae inside maize kernels in various consignments, and which were subjected to in-transit fumigation…

ABB Services Over 300 Turbochargers for CSCL

ABB Turbocharging, part of the power and automation technology group, announced it has signed its third and largest Operation Performance Package service agreement with China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), the logistics and containerized transportation company based in Shanghai, China. The contract covers the service and provision of spare parts for 113 turbochargers on 23 vessels, including 51 TPL type and 62 VTR type turbochargers. Added to existing service agreements, ABB now services over 300 turbochargers for CSCL, the largest number covered under contract with any customer.

BlueTEC Platform Ready for Generation

The first BlueTEC Tidal Energy platform was formally named by the Mayor of Texel, the Netherlands this morning. The floating platform, which holds tidal turbines below the sea surface, will soon be positioned near the island of Texel – supplying clean electricity to the Dutch grid. This first BlueTEC will serve as a demonstration platform targeted at remote locations worldwide, such as islands in Indonesia, Philippines and the Pacific. Hamburg Süd: Business is Well Despite Market Conditions

Growth in the global economy and containerized transportation by sea in 2013 was slightly below the level of the previous year. Once again, available global slot capacity outpaced container transport volume as deliveries continue to exceed the level of scrappage, which also increased. As a consequence of the continuing overcapacity, freight rates in most trades remained under pressure or declined still further. The only positive support came from fuel prices, which have fallen slightly from the highest level of the previous year.

India Plans Expansion of Auto Exports

Ennore Port Limited (EPL), Chennai and Ford India Private Limited have signed an agreement for export of Ford cars though the Ennore port for a period of 10 years. Speaking on the occasion the Union Minister for Shipping Shri G.K. Vasan said that this is a part of series of initiatives by the UPA government for attracting investments in the infrastructure sector, particularly in ports and automobile sectors. The agreement provides for various volume based discounts on wharfage by EPL ranging from5-30% to encourage more exports through EPL. Ford India Private Limited has set up a modern integrated manufacturing facility at Maraimalai Nagar, near Chennai, for export of their automobile products.
