X-Press Feeders Names Yoskovitz CEO

X-Press Feeders CFO Shmuel Yoskovitz will take over as CEO, the Singapore-based feeder containership operator announced.Yoskovitz replaces Tim Hartnoll who has served as CEO since 2017. Hartnoll will transtion back to his role as group chairman."I am turning 65 in May, and I am now most keen on ensuring that the dynamism of X-Press is maintained into the future," Hartnoll said. "I have decided to hand the role of CEO to Shmuel effective May 4, 2020, which will enable me to function at a higher level as Chairman of the Group." In addition, Ofir Vilzig will be promoted to Finance Director, the company said.

PIL Fleet Wins ESI Certification

Pacific International Lines Names Southern Pearl

Singapore-based containership operator Pacific International Lines (PIL) said that a naming ceremony of Southern Pearl had taken place at Taizhou Kouan Shipyard in China. The vessel is the first to be owned by PIL’s subsidiary Pacific Direct Line (PDL), the company said.The naming ceremony was graced by PDL board of directors, together with the Godmother of Southern Pearl, Ms. Lucy Bladinières.The ceremony was a huge success and as part of the family, we are immensely proud to witness the christening of the brand new vessel.This vessel will be delivered to PDL in September and it will ply the South Pacific island trade. Pacific International Lines Start Service in Far East - Red Sea Routes

Pacific International Lines (PIL), Singapore’s leading containership operator, announces two upgraded weekly services on the Far East – Red Sea service route. Done in collaboration with Ocean Alliance, the routes named RSS and RES will commence operations in March 2018, superseding the current three services RSS, RS3 and RS5. The route will be operated with a series of 17 x 11,000 to 14,000TEU vessels including its latest newbuilds, the 11,923TEU P Class in the service. The highly efficient and versatile P Class were purpose-built for Red Sea, with a ballast water treatment system fitted onboard and various energy saving measures implemented in its design. The enhanced Red Sea service will extensively cover North Asia and South East Asia with direct connections to the main Red Sea markets.

GE Enters the Containership Industry

GE’s Marine Solutions has signed a contract to provide auxiliary electric systems to containership operator Maersk Line’s second generation Triple-E vessels, thus representing GE’s entry into the container shipping industry. The contract will see GE provide Maersk Line with its new Power Take Off/Power Take In (PTO/PTI) technology, which consists of two drives, two induction motors and a power management system. The solution provides excess power on demand while reducing fuel consumption, GE said.

Poseidon to Go Public

Poseidon Containers Holdings, a private equity backed containership operator with an initial fleet of 18 vessels, has filed for an initial public offering. It plans to raise $100 million, which is likely only a placeholder as Poseidon has not specified the number of shares to be offered or the price range. Greece-based Poseidon said it plans to apply to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PCON. Poseidon's initial fleet of 18 container ships includes five Handymax vessels, two Panamax vessels and 11 Post-Panamax vessels. The company said in the filing it has contracted to acquire four vessels from unrelated parties for a total purchase price of $219.2 million.

Matson Honored With Coast Guard Environmental Award

Matson Navigation Company has been awarded with the U.S. Coast Guard's 2006 Rear Admiral William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Award for Excellence. The Benkert Award was created to recognize outstanding achievements in marine environmental protection that go beyond mere compliance with industrial and regulatory standards. Matson was the only containership operator recognized in the 2006 award process, which is conducted every two years. More Than 500 Wärtsilä RT-Flex Common-Rail Engines Sold

Orders for Wärtsilä RT-flex electronically-controlled common-rail marine engines have passed the 500-engine mark since the RT-flex common rail system was introduced in 1998. Although many of these are of the most powerful RT-flex96C type, progress has been achieved with the smallest, the RT-flex50, which has a rapidly growing order book. The new RT-flex82C and RT-flex82T engine types have also made a good start with orders being booked by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd and Doosan Engine Co Ltd, both in Korea. The RT-flex common-rail system was introduced by Wärtsilä in 1998 when it was first applied in a research engine. The first production engine then went into service in September 2001.

Industry veteran Joseph F. Daly, dies at 91

Longtime industry veteran Joseph F. Daly passed away on April 2, 2005. He was 91 years old. Joseph F. Daly began his career in the transportation industry in 1947 when he joined F. W. Hartmann directly out of the armed forces. A veteran of the US Army, Daly enlisted at age 17 and returned from active duty with the rank of Captain after fighting in the Pacific during WWII. Daly later served as President of F. W. Hartmann, a major steamship agent and freight broker that represented Hansa Line, National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia, Black Star line, Maritima Andina and others. F.W. Hartmann, together with Norton Lilly, would later form Containership Agency Inc. (CAI), a steamship agency representing Italian Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company.
