MAN Energy Solutions has announced that VTA (Variable Turbine Area) is now standard on TCA turbochargers for its MAN 51/60 engine type, marking the first time that VTA technology has been approved as standard for a large-bore MAN four-stroke engine. Saab announced it has signed a A$24.2 million (US$18.5 million) contract with ASC for supply of an updated Integrated Ship Control Management and Monitoring System (ISCMMS) for four Royal Australian Navy Collins class submarines. ISCMMS provides maneuvering and fully integrated ship management of propulsion, trim, power generation and ship services. Deliverables under the contract include updated hardware and spares that addresses obsolescence issues and maintains regional superiority edge for the Australian submarines.

Durability field-test results of ABB’s variable valve train system, Valve Control Management (VCM), have shown unprecedented success of the technology on an MTU high speed gas engine. The successful running of each VCM actuator for 7,000 hours on an engine is an important milestone for the forthcoming serialization of this technology. Defence Minister Senator David Johnston announced the Defence Materiel Organisation has signed a multi-million dollar contract with ASC Pty Ltd to update the control management and monitoring system for the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarines. Senator Johnston said the Integrated Ship Control Management and Monitoring System is a highly automated computerised system, which enables the crew of a Collins submarine to control, monitor and manage the large number of diverse and complex systems on board the submarines.

Minister for Defense Stephen Smith and Minister for Defense Materiel Mike Kelly today announced further significant initiatives to both maintain the capability of Australia’s Collins Class submarine fleet and further improve Collins Class maintenance, sustainment and availability. The Collins Class submarine fleet of six submarines is an essential part of Australia’s national security capability. The first Collins Class submarine, HMAS Collins, was commissioned in July 1996. The sixth and last of the Collins Class, HMAS Rankin, was commissioned in March 2003. The Collins Class was designed with a theoretical platform life of 28 years, which provides for an on paper indicative service life for the fleet of 2024 to 2031.

ABB Turbocharging said it will step up its promotion of variable valve train system, Valve Control Management (VCM). VCM helps a turbocharger to manage air actively so that an engine can operate at different speeds, loads and ambient conditions, thereby increasing its range of application and operation. A major market for this technology is gas power plants. VCM offers new options for higher performance engines that need either a wide range of operation or a fast load response, such as on tugboats, off-highway trucks and emergency power generators. Suboptimal air-fuel flow results in greater risk of engine knock, more polluted exhaust and lower efficiency.

Jaret Garber has been promoted to the position of Financial Manager of Testing and Services. Based in Lafayette, La., Garber will manage financial reporting and analysis of testing and services. This includes management of invoices, financial planning, analysis and division financial performance and monthly closing. Additionally, Garber will be responsible for cost control management; bonus plans and earn-outs; mergers and acquisitions; and balance sheets. Prior to promotion, Garber was the Financial Analyst and Fleet Administrator.

Braemar Shipping Services plc has launched a new subsidiary called Braemar Marine, which will provide diverse marine surveying and adjusting services to the global maritime, transportation risk and insurance markets. Braemar Marine commenced operations on August 1st, 2009 from its headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., USA, and has established offices in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Seattle and London to enhance existing group marine surveying and adjusting capabilities in Latin America, Australasia and the Far Fast. United Overseas Tankers Ltd.
