The launch of Europort 2019 at the Rotterdam Ahoy yesterday (November 05) saw well-known journalist Geert Maarse bring four of the leading owners in Europe’s special ship segments to grips with the key challenges facing the maritime industries today and tomorrow. Now in its 39th edition, Europort continues to hold its own as one of the most significant events in the maritime calendar, with registered visitors this year reaching 27,000. In 2020, a new convention center will open alongside the existing site, expanding overall space by 50%.

Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that employees from its Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls Shipbuilding divisions received awards during the 2019 Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) National Conference and STEM Career Fair. The conference, the largest for Asian Americans in the United States, was held Oct. 10-12 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh.Marie Lawson, an engineer at Newport News, and Scott Chin, an engineer at Ingalls, received Professional Achievement awards.

Chinese Consortium Bags USD 1.4bln Panama Bridge Project

The government of Panama gave a US$1.4 billion contract to build a bridge over the Panama Canal to Panama Cuarto Puente, a Chinese consortium.Panama Cuarto Puente consortium or so-called Panama Fourth Bridge Consortium,  composed of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and its unit China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), will design and build a bridge over the Panama Canal.According to a report in Reuters, the 6.5-km (4-mile) bridge will have six car lanes and a two-way metro line. SC Ports State of the Port Emphasizes Infrastructure to Support Growth

Asia-U.S. Trade to Grow 7%

About 500 people gathered at the Long Beach Convention Center for the event, which brings together a panel of shipping and trade experts to offer their perspectives on industry trends and how they affect the San Pedro Bay port complex. One of the panelists, Drewry Maritime Research Senior Quantitative Economist Mario Moreno, predicted Asia-U.S. trade will grow 6.8 percent in 2018, the fastest pace in more than half-a-dozen years. He also estimated the overall U.S. economy will expand 2.8 percent. While President Donald Trump and China have proposed higher tariffs, an all-out trade war between China and the United States appears unlikely, according to Moreno. “Both nations have a lot to lose,” Moreno said.

Tampa Bay Ferry Pilot Program Underway

HMS Ferries, Inc. has begin a passenger only ferry pilot project in the Tampa Bay, Fla. area, called the “Cross Bay Ferry.” The six-month pilot project was launched on November 1, 2016 and will connect the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa, and end on May 1, 2017. The pilot project is a unique, regional effort designed to demonstrate water transportation technology and service options to the residents and businesses of the Tampa Bay region. The Cross-Bay Ferry is a collaboration between St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Hillsborough and Pinellas County, and operates between the Vinoy Basin in St.

Holcomb to Speak at Indiana Logistics Summit

Newly-elected Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb will provide special keynote remarks at next week's Indiana Logistics Summit.
