NYK Pushes Forward its "Sail GREEN;" to Build a Dozen LNG-Fueled PCTCs
NYK signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the consecutive building of LNG-fueled PCTCs at Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd. and Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. Twelve new ships are planned to be built, six ships each at the two shipyards, for delivery successively from fiscal 2025 to fiscal 2028.The dozen ship is in accordance with the PCTC fleet replacement plan to achieve NYK’s environment management target, which is to reduce CO2 emissions per ton-kilometer of transport by 50% by 2050.
K Line, FueLNG Team-up on LNG Bunker
Japanese shipping firm Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has announced that it has concluded a ship management agreement with FueLNG Pte Ltd for a 7500 m3 LNG bunkering vessel (LBV).FueLNG will own and operate the vessel, as well as carry out all commercial operations, said K Line press statement.The partnership will combine K Line’s extensive ship management and LNG transportation experience with FueLNG’s LNG bunkering expertise, which includes more than 160 truck-to-ship LNG bunkering operations conducted to-date. NYK Intros Compliant Additive for LSFO
The Japanese Shipping Company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) have jointly developed a new fuel-oil additive for low-sulphur compliant fuel-oil that meets SOx emission requirements.Yunic 800VLS (patent pending) is Japan’s first additive for very low sulfur fuel oil, or VLSFO. The additive improves safety by helping to avoid troubles that may be caused by certain contents of VLSFO.A global sulfur cap will enter into force on January 1, 2020, and one way ships can meet the requirement is by using VLSFO (sulfur content below 0.5%). Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced a plan to issue green bonds (its 20th and 21st series unsecured corporate bonds) through a public offering in Japan's domestic market. It also announced the acquisition of a second opinion from a third-party institute.Japan's 1st Green Bonds are aimed at individual investors. World’s First LNG-fueled PCTC Delivered
United European Car Carriers (UECC), which is equally owned by NYK and Wallenius Lines, took delivery of the world’s first LNG-fueled Pure Car and Truck Carrier from Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. on September 29 at the NACKS shipyard in Nantong, China. The vessel will be named “Auto Eco” when reaching North Europe towards the end of November, and it is the first of two sister vessels to be delivered. These new, unique vessels are equipped with dual-fuel engines that can use either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or heavy fuel oil and marine gas oil. These vessels will be put into service in Europe, where strict sulphur emission regulations have been introduced.
NYK Joins Study for LNG Bunkering in Yokohama
NYK is participating in a study launched by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to explore the feasibility of LNG bunkering in Yokohama. This study is examining the technological and infrastructural requirements for establishment of an LNG bunkering hub at the port of Yokohama to supply LNG as fuel to ships. A kick-off meeting of the study’s steering committee was held on June 9 for the creation of a facility development plan by the end of the year. In accordance with the NYK Group’s medium-term management plan, “More Than Shipping 2018,” NYK has started the process of using LNG to fuel some ships. In August 2015, the company received delivery of Japan's first LNG-fueled tugboat named “Sakigake”.
LNG Bunker JV Project for European Ports Supply
Bomin & Linde outline JV plans to target infrastructure supply of LNG in the European maritime sector. The Linde Group announce a joint venture with Bomin, a subsidiary of Marquard & Bahls, to build infrastructure for liquefied natural gas in the European maritime sector. The transaction, subject to the approval of the relevant antitrust authorities is due to start its operations in the latter part of 2012 with headquarters in Hamburg. The Joint Venture company will establish operations in a number of key ports throughout the so-called "Emission Control Areas" in North-West Europe. Vessel emissions in ECAs will have to be reduced from January 1st 2015, which would force ship owners to limit their sulphur emissions drastically.
