GE to Supply Propulsion Systems for MARAD's New Training Ships

Simec Inks Technology Partnership with GE

Five vessels of Smit Lamnalco, the global marine service provider, played the key role in the unberthing and float-over of the world's largest high voltage direct current (HVDC) platform, DolWin beta, at Drydocks World - Dubai. The five escort tugs, with more than a combined 450 metric tons bollard pull power, provided marine support not only during the unberthing process but also in the 24-mile tow offshore and its float over on to the heavy transport vessel, Dockwise owned and operated, Mighty Servant 1.

Foss Assists Lab in Hydrogen Fuel Research

Foss Maritime and one of America's most prestigious national research laboratories are joining in a project aimed at producing cleaner air, less costly fuel and a healthier environment. Seattle-based Foss and its Hawaiian subsidiary, Young Brothers Ltd., are partnering with hydrogen researchers at Sandia National Laboratory. ABS: Approval in Principle for Floating Renewable Energy Plant

ABS has issued its first Approval in Principle (AIP) for a new concept renewable energy design in which a moored spar uses ammonia in a closed-cycle process to produce electrical power for a commercial utility grid. Unlike wind, tidal or solar power the advanced design for this Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system can deliver constant output 24 hours a day. “This concept combines proven offshore principles with off-the-shelf power, technology and proprietary innovations, all assembled in a unique way,” says Ian Simpson, ABS Director of Offshore Technology and Business Development, Americas Division. Developed by OTEC International (OTI) LLC of Baltimore, Maryland, the approach converts liquid ammonia into gas in a heat exchanger using warm ocean surface water.

DDG 1000: Milestone at U.S. Navy Test SIte

Converteam in partnership with the U.S. Navy have successfully tested the DDG 1000’s high voltage Integrated Power System (IPS)(1) to full power at the Land Based Test Site located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. DDG 1000 is the first U.S. Navy surface combatant to leverage this technology—an all-electric architecture providing electric power for both propulsion and ship services. As the integrated power systems provider, Converteam is responsible for the entire program’s high voltage system design, commissioning and testing at the land based test site. The test demonstrated full power operations of the IPS, which is a major milestone prior to delivery of equipment to the ship.

Raytheon Awarded Contract Modification

Raytheon Company, Tucson, Ariz., is being awarded a $13,453,320 firm-fixed-price modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-02-C-5415) for block 1B upgrade and conversion equipment for Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS) for the U.S. Navy. Three overhauls and three on-board repair parts kits are being acquired. The MK-15 Phalanx, CIWS is a fast reaction terminal defense against low and high flying, high speed maneuvering anti-ship missile threats which have penetrated all other ships' defenses. Work will be performed in Louisville, Ky., and is expected to be completed by June 2005. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

AUV Cooperation Agreement Signed

General Atomics, Kongsberg Maritime and C & C Technologies have agreed to cooperate on the development of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and associated technologies. Kongsberg Maritime, manufacturer of advanced hydroacoustic instruments, the HUGIN family of AUVs and other maritime electronic products, has signed a cooperative agreement with General Atomics and C&C Technologies via its affiliate, Kongsberg Underwater Technology Inc, located in Lynnwood, Wash. General Atomics (GA) and its affiliates, headquartered in San Diego, Calif, are high-technology development companies in areas ranging from nuclear technologies and advanced defense and energy systems to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), including the PREDATOR, a remotely operated surveillance aircraft.
