Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) officer, Tan Hanqiang, currently First Secretary (Maritime), High Commission of the Republic of Singapore to the United Kingdom (UK), has been appointed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as Vice-Chair of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) with effective December 16, 2022. Tan succeeds Harry Conway (Liberia).This marks the first time a Singaporean has assumed the Vice-Chair appointment for the IMO MEPC in more than 20 years. Previously, an MPA Officer, Mr Zafrul Alam, served as Vice-Chair for IMO MEPC from 1999 to 2000.

Containership giant Seaspan Corporation announced on Wednesday that it now has financing lined up for its entire 70-vessel newbuild program.With the completion of the latest $1.4 billion deal in December, Seaspan said its financing proceeds are approximately $6.9 billion.Seaspan, a subsidiary of Atlas Corp, said the $1.4 billion will be used to finance ten 15,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel newbuilds, the last of its recent $7.6 billion containership ordering spree, including three ships that have already been delivered.

The Joint Shipping Initiative - made up of Shell, BP, Maersk, Stena and Japanese shipping companies NYK, MOL and "K" Line - has announced it has given$1.5 million of additional funds to a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) project to improve the lives of Somalis and security for seafarers. The UNDP's "Alternative Livelihoods to Piracy in Puntland and Central Regions ofSomalia" project aims to reduce piracy off the coast of east Africa through local economic development, job creation, training, and business development grants on-shore in one of the world's poorest countries.

Private maritime security services provider, Protection Vessels International (PVI), part of Protection Group International, informs that it has achieved ISO/PAS 28007 certification from Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA). PVI was one of the first private maritime security companies (PMSCs) to participate in the ISO/PAS 28007 pilot scheme which aims to set the benchmark for PMSCs who want to demonstrate to the international community that they, and the operatives they supply, are of the right quality to legally, safely and effectively guard commercial shipping on the high seas.

Private maritime security service company Protection Vessels International (PVI), part of Protection Group International, announced that it has achieved accreditation to deploy armed guards on German flagged vessels. Applicable from December 1, 2013, the updated German regulations are more stringent than any other existing standard and go beyond ISO 28000/28007 certification, which is currently being piloted. The German regulations ensure private maritime security companies' (PMSCs') operating procedures are comprehensive, well documented and executed safely.

The Navy is to commission amphibious transport dock ship 'USS Anchorage' in namesake port city of Anchorage, Alaska, 4, May 2013. Adm. Cecil Haney, commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, will deliver the ceremony's keynote address. Annette Conway, wife of retired Gen. James T. Conway, the 34th commandant of the Marine Corps, is serving as the ship's sponsor. "Like the previous USS Anchorage, I am confident LPD 23 and her crew will represent the United States with distinction around the world for many decades to come," said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus.

Greene’s Energy Group (GEG) named David Lang as Mid-Continent Regional Manager for the Testing and Services business unit, announced President Eric Langlinais. Based in Lafayette, La., Lang will provide leadership, direction and operational support to the facility managers in the Bossier City, La.; Kilgore, Texas; Ardmore and Weatherford, Okla.; Ft. Smith and Conway, Ark.; and Dodge City, Kan. facilities. Prior to his new role, Lang was Store Manager for Eagle Oilfield Services, a subsidiary of Greene’s Energy Group.

The Colliers International report, "CapEx or Capsize," underscores the idea that cities need to spend the capital to upgrade their ports, or risk "capsizing" their economies. Report author, KC Conway, notes that America needs $3.6 trillion in funding for infrastructure by 2020 to remain competitive in light of the upcoming Panama Canal expansion. Six offshore wind energy trainees from North Wales have successfully completed a year-long training program with the UK’s only dedicated academy for the offshore wind industry and are ready to take up positions in this rapidly expanding industry. The trainees were fortunate enough to be selected for Offshore Marine Academy structured traineeship, which selects candidates with an affinity for the marine and coastal environment and aim to prepare them for a new career in offshore wind.

Six young men from North Wales have taken their first steps into a new career in the offshore wind energy industry having been accepted as trainees with the UK’s only dedicated trainee academy for the offshore wind industry, Offshore Marine Academy. Ranging in age from 20 to 24, the trainees come from a variety of backgrounds including plumbing, the Royal Marines and electronics, but all applied with the aim of starting a long-term career in the growing local offshore wind industry.

Revenue from this order is expected to begin late in the fourth quarter of 2011 and conclude in the fourth quarter of 2014. The future USS Anchorage (LPD 23) launched Feb. 12 from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding's Avondale, La., shipyard, marking a key milestone in the ship's construction process. Due to extensive pre-outfitting efforts, Anchorage will be the most complete ship in the class at the time of launch. "We started construction on the first ship of the LPD 17 class 11 years ago." said Jay Stefany, LPD 17 program manager for the Navy's Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. Anchorage is the seventh ship of the San Antonio-class of landing platform docks and is named for the largest city in Alaska. The ship's sponsor is Annette Conway, wife of U.S. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway. She will christen the ship this May in a traditional Navy ceremony.

KVH Industries, Inc., (Nasdaq: KVHI) announced that it has received a new $1m order for its CNS-5000, a self-contained navigation system that combines fiber optic gyro (FOG)-based inertial measurement technology from KVH with global positioning system (GPS) technology from NovAtel. Zenith Maritime announced that Capt. David Yell has joined its faculty of 17 instructors across the country. Captain Yell will specialize in teaching those seeking advanced licenses, above the 100 ton Master level. Educated at HMS Conway nautical college in the UK, Yell graduated with honors and received the annual prize for the proficiency in the management of boats. He followed a 24 year career path of Cadet through Master (14 years as Captain) in the merchant service specializing in refrigerated cargos on worldwide voyages.

They also stressed that together the nation's sea services will focus on remaining a balanced maritime force while promoting greater collective security, stability and trust. Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-MO) delivered an opening statement. Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, discussed the integrated capabilities of the three US maritime services and their major defense missions: forward presence; deterrence; sea control; power projection; maritime security; and humanitarian assistance/disaster response. Admiral Thad Allen, Commandant, US Coast Guard, testified concerning the national defense capabilities of the Coast Guard and implementation priorities. General James Conway, Commandant, US Marine Corps, opined that, by 2030, fresh water will be equally as important as oil products.

Thad Allen released the "Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower" on Oct 17. As the maritime strategy was released, Enterprise Strike Group (ENTSG) was executing it while forward deployed in the 5th Fleet area of operations. The new strategy stresses the importance of the Navy's core capabilities of forward presence, deterrence, sea control, and power projection as well as its expanded core capabilities of humanitarian assistance/disaster response and maritime security. ENTSG's assets are currently deployed throughout the Eastern Hemisphere in the performance of those missions.
