US Department of Energy Releases Offshore Wind Strategy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released its Offshore Wind Energy Strategy, a first of its kind, comprehensive summary of the Department’s efforts to meet President Biden’s goal to deploy 30GW of offshore wind energy by 2030.The strategy aims to set the nation on a pathway to 110GW or more by 2050.Deploying 30GW of offshore wind would provide enough power for 10 million homes, support 77,000 jobs, and spur $12 billion per year in direct private investment, says the DOE.The…

AAPA Cruise Seminar to Explore, Assess Industry Issues

The American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 2013 Cruise Seminar in San Francisco, April 24-26, will kick off with a candid look inside the cruise industry from the perspective of four key cruise line executives and end with a tour of the Port of San Francisco to see the impact of the America’s Cup on port operations. In between these bookend sessions, seminar participants will be treated to a host of presentations ranging from new international regulations on ship air emissions to itinerary planning, cruise facility design, financing and joint-use terminal opportunities.

Klevan President & CEO of SeaKeepers Society

Following a unanimous board decision, the International SeaKeepers Society welcomed Dean C. Klevan as its new President and CEO. Klevan joins SeaKeepers following a distinguished career in the financial services industry. Most recently, he was the President of the Coral Gables Trust Company, an institution he helped to found. Klevan also served in senior positions with Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, and Citicorp in the United States and abroad. He brings a business perspective to the challenges faced by a not-for-profit in today’s weakened economic environment.

A Farewell to John Lynch

The following Miami Herald Notice was sent out by Seafarershouse.org: Dear friends, We note with sorrow the passing of a friend to seafarers, former President and CEO of Seaboard Marine, Mr. John Lynch.    John was our 2006 International Golden Compass Award recipient and a long-term supporter of the work of Seafarers' House at Port Everglades.  His own years at sea left him with a special appreciation for the safe haven of centers like ours and we are grateful for his years of commitment to our mission.   Our prayers and sympathy extend to his family and circle of loved ones.   A memorial Mass will be held on October 7 at 3:00 pm at St. Raymond's Catholic Church, 3475 SW 17th Street, Coral Gables. Cammell Laird Wins HAL Cruise Ship Fix

Cammell Laird (Gibraltar) has won the contract to repair the former Holland America Line cruise vessel Rotterdam, the vessel arriving in Gibraltar on July 11, 2004, and due to stay at the yard for between six and 12 months. Rotterdam is one of the oldest if not the oldest cruise ships afloat, and it is the intention of the Dutch Government, after the repairs, to tow the cruiseship to her final resting berth in Rotterdam. The grand old lady will have hotel and conference facilities and part of the vessel will become a Museum allowing people from all over the world to see the luxury of this vessel. Works will include various amounts of steel and pipe work, cleaning, upgrades, drydocking, painting.

VADM Bill Rea Arrangements

As reported in yesterday’s “Maritime Today”, VADM Bill Rea, USCG (ret) died Saturday. The family will have a private memorial service in Coral Gables, FL this week. The funeral service and burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC in January or February.
