MoU Ensures Dialog Between US Rivers Leaders

Leadership from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Coast Guard and the inland towing industry signed a memorandum of understanding today, designed to ensure consistent communications and support efficient and safe movement of commerce on the western rivers of the United States. The memorandum, signed by Jim Guidry (Kirby Inland Marine LP and RIETF co-chairman), Rear Admiral June E. Ryan (commander of the 9th Coast Guard District), Rear Admiral David R. Corps to Release Draft Proposal for Navigation Study

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing to release a draft proposal for public comment and review in the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois Waterway Navigation Feasibility Study. The Corps' study team met with federal principals from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, Fish and Wildlife Service and Maritime Administration to discuss the range of possible alternatives. The next step will be the preparation of a draft report in May, which will contain the draft proposal. The Corps will hold public meetings in June before preparing the final report late this summer. All comments will be reflected in the final report.

Sherman Elected New Assistant Chief Of Corps

Jim H. Sherman was appointed as the new assistant chief of Planning, Programs and Project Management Division for the New Orleans District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Sherman, who previously served as chief of program development and lead program analyst at the Corps' Mississippi Valley Division, has been with the Corps for more than 33 years. He will oversee the district's range of planning studies, and manage all ongoing and new project development.
