The Port of Corpus Christi Authority has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as part of the Port’s commitment to decarbonization and energy transition initiatives.The agreement between the two parties is intended to advance collaboration between the Port of Corpus Christi, NREL and Port tenants by identifying scalable energy transition and decarbonization projects that require techno-economic-analysis, modeling, testing and validation efforts unique to NREL’s capabilities.

The Port of Corpus Christi Authority (PCCA) has added a new patrol boat to its security force.The new 44-foot port security boat was purchased using a combination of Port Security Grant Program funds from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as well as matching funds from the PCCA. The new boat replaces one existing police vessel that has been in operation for more than a decade and had limitations when operating in severe sea states.

The bodies of two of four workers missing after a dredging vessel caught fire and sank in Corpus Christi, Texas, were recovered on Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.Four personnel working on the dredger Waymon L Boyd went missing and six were sent to the hospital on Friday after the vessel caught fire in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. The Corpus Christi Ship Channel is open to restricted operations following a record six-day closure caused by Hurricane Harvey. Harvey has left many Gulf Coast petroleum refining centers either completely shut down or with operations significantly scaled back. An estimated 25 percent of the region’s refining capacity is operational, positioning Corpus Christi as the largest refining center on the Texas Coast that is fully operational. The ship channel’s restricted opening, authorized by the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port, will allow the seven local refineries to startup operations in an effort to serve the already short transportation fuels markets in the region and the nation.

Port Commissioners approved a 25% reduction in the Port of Corpus Christi Authority security surcharge on wharfage and dockage effective April 1, 2011. The reduction will provide an estimated $900,000 cost savings to our customers and help the Port maintain a competitive advantage. “The Port is always looking for better ways to serve our customers. Reducing the security surcharge will not cut security efforts or personnel.” said Mike Carrell, Port Commission Chairman. In response to the September 2001 terrorist attack on the United States, ports around the nation increased security efforts to better protect their facilities. These increased security efforts required significant investment of capital funds and increased operating costs.

Adesta, a multi-discipline infrastructure service provider and integrator, has announced that it has been awarded a $1.8 million contract to provide and integrate physical security, access control, and new intrusion detection systems for the Port of Corpus Christi (POCC), the nation's sixth largest port. More than $92.3 million in grants were given to 51 ports located throughout the nation. Specifically designed and developed for Alyeska, the boats will be used by Crowley in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System trade. Alert was deployed in February; Attentive was delivered in June, and Aware was delivered in July.

Patricia Cardenas, community relations manager for the Port of Corpus Christi Authority in Corpus Christi, Texas, will receive the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) Professional Port Manager certification as part of the port association’s 2006 annual convention activities. The certification program, initiated by AAPA in 1995, encourages, rewards and advances professional standards in public port management. In partial fulfillment of her PPM program requirements, Ms. Cardenas wrote a thesis titled, “21st Century Challenges for Military Strategic Port Authorities: The Neglected Line in the Army’s Strategic Mobility Plan.”
