Batteries for maritime power have been picking up big momentum, benefiting from the most basic concept within Econ 101: supply and demand.On May 19 Corvus Energy announced it would establish a lithium ion battery manufacturing facility in Port Bellingham, Wash., just north of Seattle. General Dynamics Information Technology, a business unit of General Dynamics, was awarded a contract by the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command to provide enterprise IT and cybersecurity services to the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division. The single-award, task order contract has a potential value of approximately $81.3 million for five years. General Dynamics along with Purdue University and 10 Indiana-based companies will provide the NSWC Crane Division with enterprise IT service management, cybersecurity, systems engineering, data protection, cross domain security and information exchange and technical advisory services management. Work on this contract will be performed in Crane, Ind.

A Department of Defense, Navy, $12,490,000 contract has been awarded to General Atomics, San Diego Calif., for lithium-ion batteries and associated accessories to be utilized by the dry combat submersible program for the U.S. Special Operations Command. The batteries and accessories will be used on Navy submersible vehicles as primary sources of power. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by September 2018. Fiscal 2013 Research, Development, Test and Evaluation funding in the amount of $12,490,000 will be obligated at the time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. US Department of Defense, Navy,  awards LRAD Corp. of San Diego, a US$12,231,360 order for its products. The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract is for for small, medium and large acoustic hailing devices, mounts, test teardown and evaluation, provision item order spares, and data. Small, medium and large acoustic hailing devices will be used by the Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Afloat Program Office (PMS 480) and/or other Department of Defense Activities. Acoustic hailing devices will be used in support of large and small deck naval surface ships, submarines, security boats, shore security operations and others as warning devices employed in anti-terrorism/force protection missions.

The U.S. The Navy is modifying the total amount of a previously awarded contract to Huntington Ingalls Inc, Newport News, Va., (N00024-09-C-2116) by $407,408,093 in order to extend construction preparation efforts and provide the ability to procure additional long lead material and advance construction activities for CVN 79 if required. The current contract has been in place since 2009. This modification for additional long lead material and advance construction activity may help preserve the construction schedule. Work will be performed in Newport News, Va., and is expected to complete by October 2015. Additional funding is not being obligated at this time. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

EnerSys Energy Products, Inc., Warrensburg, Mo., is being awarded a $17,816,784 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the design and construction of submarine valve regulated lead acid class batteries and associated parts and engineering support. This contract is for the procurement of replacement back-up batteries for in-service nuclear submarines. Work will be performed in Warrensburg, Mo., and is expected to be completed by October 2012. Contract funds in the amount of $12,100 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. FLIR Systems, Inc., North Billerica, Mass., is being awarded an $8,624,000 firm-fixed-price contract for non-warranty repairs and spares for the maritime forward looking infrared radar (MARFLIR); high-power microscopic field (HPMF); and MicroStar systems. The MARFLIR, HPMF, and MicroStar systems are to provide maritime crafts, ground vehicles, and unmanned aircraft with all-weather, day/night, high-resolution, stabilized, forward-looking infrared thermal imaging capability to augment existing optical and radar sensors by imaging enemy forces on land, at-sea and in the air, particularly during periods of darkness and poor visibility. These systems enhance the detection, recognition, identification and tracking targets.

The Pennsylvania State University Electro-Optics Center, Freeport, Pa., is being awarded an $11,488,791 cost-plus-fixed fee contract for research, design, development, and delivery of sub-systems for use in the next generation radars and the Common Data Sensor Architecture (CDSA) Program. The CDSA is a centralized system for collecting input information from a variety of sensors and even providing information from one group of sensors to another. Two technologies are fundamental for the CDSA to successfully transition to producible, fielded systems: high voltage/ high power switching devices based on halide chemical vapor deposition; and wavelength division multiplexing.

Undersea Sensor Systems Incorp., Columbia City, Ind., is being awarded a $9,750,276 firm-fixed-price contract for the procurement of AN/SSQ-62E sonobuoys in support of the United States Navy Air Antisubmarine Forces in the mission functions of detection, classification, and localization of adversary submarines during peacetime and combat operations. This contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $18,923,029. ITT Corporation has received a contract to provide night vision equipment to the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard through 2012. The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division, Crane, Ind., awarded the indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract for submersible AN/PVS-14 night vision monocular devices. The contract has a potential total value of $37 million. Work for the contract will be performed at ITT Night Vision, based in Roanoke, Va. ITT's AN/PVS-14 is a monocular Generation (Gen) 3 device, which allows the user to adjust the gain control for improved clarity of vision in varying light conditions. The unit can be handheld, head-mounted, weapon-mounted or adapted to a camera or camcorder. The submersible version will be provided on this contract.

FLIR Systems Inc. is being awarded a maximum $34.8m firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for enhanced targeting sights (ETS) for Special Operations Forces Laser Marker (SOFLAM) system. The ETS is a companion sight for the SOFLAM. The system uses a special image intensifier designed to "see" the wavelength of a single range finding pulse as well as the repetitive pulses of precision munitions guidance laser designating a target. The ETS increases the accuracy of the SOFLAM by allowing operators to view the laser spot and target scene simultaneously.
