DNV-GL Approves Kongsberg Engine Room Simulators

Kongsberg Maritime has received DNV-GL certification for three of its latest engine room simulator models designed to provide in-depth training on the K-Sim Engine simulator platform. The National Defense University of Malaysia has selected Kongsberg Maritime’s Engine Room Simulator platform K-Sim Engine for its facility in Kuala Lumpur. The contract, Signed in April 2015, was won with support from Kongsberg Maritime’s local sales representatives, Kelana Stabil (M) Sdn Bhd and civil contracting partner HJS Maritime Sdn Bhd. Port of Portland Chooses NetSuite Software

NetSuite Inc., provider of cloud-based financials/ERP and omnichannel commerce software suites, announced that Victoria's Port of Portland has gone live with NetSuite. Port of Portland replaced its existiny systems for financial; shipping, accounts payable and receivable; payroll and maintenance, projects and operations, with a single instance of NetSuite for financials, payroll, project management, asset management and shipping. Port of Portland said it was able to improve the efficiencies of its financials and project management capabilities with NetSuite, as well as streamline its ship scheduling process to support its growing customer base of exporters.

SpecTec to Purchase 20% MarineXchange

SpecTec Group, IT supplier to the merchant and cruise shipping markets, has recently acquired a 20% share in MarineXChange Software GmbH. MarineXchange is a provider of enterprise resource management software to the cruise industry. "The two companies have collaborated for several years already, and our software portfolios and philosophies complement each other very well", said Giampiero Soncini, CEO of SpecTec Group. MarineXchange software can also be used for the food and beverage management of large fleets, as well as for land based hotels. MarineXchange software runs at the office and remote installations such as ships, hotels and warehouses. The software provides tools to collect and retain data, automate processes and share data across an entire organization.

Maritime Education On The Upswing

The pressures - political, financial and environmental -to ensure onboard personnel are skillfully trained at operating increasingly complex vessels is tremendous. Simply stated, vessel owners and operators must employ increasingly advanced training courses - both system- and vessel-specific - as well as general courses, in order to avoid costly accidents and litigation. In just the past few years, mariners have proven these courses work, as the amount of oil spilled into the sea has decreased dramatically. According to the USCG, in 1990, tankbarges moved 72 billion gallons of oil, spilling 992,000 gallons, or one-one millionth of a percent.
