Damen Marine Components has won a contract to supply steering gear, rudders and stern tube parts for an Antarctic research vessel of the Chilean Navy, under LRS -Polar 5 Class notation. The contract was awarded by ASMAR Talcahuano Shipyard, Chile. Design of the vessel was done in collaboration with VARD Canada.Damen Marine Components will be supplying twin COMMANDER Ram-Type electro-hydraulic steering gear units, twin ATLANTIC semi-spade rudders and twin stern tube casting parts. The vessel will be capable of speeds up to 15 knots.

Military Sealift Command accepted delivery of its newest dry cargo/ammunition ship, USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE 13), during a short ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO Ship Yard San Diego. The ship, which was christened Nov. 12, 2011 in San Diego, honors slain civil rights leader Medgar Wiley Evers, who is remembered for his efforts to end segregation at the University of Mississippi in the 1950s and for his opposition to Jim Crow laws in the 1960s. Since its launch, the ship has been undergoing a series of tests and trials in preparation for its delivery to MSC.

USNS Medgar Evers, the newest ship in the U.S. Navy's Lewis and Clark-class of dry cargo/ammunition ships operated by Military Sealift Command, was christened Nov. 12 during a morning ceremony at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. With the traditional words, "I christen you USNS Medgar Evers," Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of the ship's namesake, broke the traditional bottle of champagne against the bow of the ship. Evers was launched Oct. 29 and is scheduled for delivery to MSC in spring 2012.

The Coast Guard urges all interested parties to attend a meeting at 1 pm on April 7, 2008 to review and improve the Tongass Narrows Voluntary Waterway Guide. The Southeast Alaska Pilots' Association will host the meeting at the "Crow's Nest" on the U.S. Coast Guard base in Ketchikan. Since taking effect in 1999, the Tongass Narrows Voluntary Waterway Guide has helped de-conflict traffic on the congested waterway. The Guide represents the consensus of all the waterway's stakeholders. It is an evolving document that depends on the input of waterway users for its vitality. This meeting will serve as a forum where all concerns, solutions, and proposals for change to the Guide can be shared.

The 94-ft. (28.6 m) explorer yacht Whale Song is designed specifically for the owner to safely travel the world in his quest for observing whales in their natural environment. The yacht is built extremely strong with a superstructure aft layout for maximum comfort at sea. The hull is steel construction to ABS ice class scantlings and contains spacious and comfortable amenities for accommodating the owner and seven guests on extended voyages. This yacht has been designed to utilize commercial type systems for reliability, durability and minimum crew. Below deck, the vessel is divided into six watertight compartments by utilizing five watertight bulkheads. The crew quarters are forward which allows for separation of owner and guests from the crew when desired.

Trinity Yachts, Inc. will build for a New Zealand client a 192 ft. global explorer yacht to be delivered in the fall of 2001. This yacht will be the first of Trinity Yachts Explorer Series and features large capacities for fuel, water, provisions and tenders in order to allow cruising for extended periods of time in remote areas of the South Pacific. The vessel, the largest contracted to date, will be the fourth of the New Class of Global Explorer yachts designed and marketed by Trinity Yachts, Inc. The new Ulysses will be constructed and finished to a very high standard with classification to Lloyds 100A1 LMC for private yachts. Main engines will be twin Caterpillar 3512B rated at 1,500 hp each at 1,600 rpm for a cruise speed of 15 knots with a range of 8,000 miles at 12 knots.

It's been a year since MarineNews linked the dual tugmeets of the first week of September, one in New York City, the other upstate, at Waterford. Coupled, they make an interesting study, for their differences as much as their similarities. The tugs of New York City come in all sizes, but are typically large. Just as New York is a city of (many) skyscrapers, so it's a city of (many) monster tugboats, as harbor craft go. Waterford, a few miles north of Albany, is the gateway to the Erie Canal - is actually on the canal. While New York State's canals have renewed potential for commercial service, they're known most widely as recreational attractions for people who drive (many) large and pricey boats.

Of all the waterways in fable and lore, the Erie Canal is famed least for its maritime nature. The way things are shaping-up in such realms as national security, the price of fuel, environmental cleanliness and such, waterborne transport displays more and more advantage for the good of all.

Holland America Line will hold the official naming ceremony for it's first Signature-class ship, ms Eurodam, July 1, 2008, in Rotterdam, the city where the 135-year-old Dutch company was founded. Naming ceremonies will be held near the company's original headquarters, which now operates as the Hotel New York. Numerous events and activities are being planned to showcase the vessel to key stakeholders, including past guests, travel agents, former employees, local dignitaries, media and others. The ship arrives Jun. 29 to begin four days of celebrations and departs Jul. 2 for a three-day prelude cruise with its first guests. In the days leading up to the naming, the Eurodam will sail from Venice, Italy, to Southampton, England, before arriving in Rotterdam.

SPS Limited Partnership LLLP (SPS) of Baltimore, MD and Canton, MA has leased the 1,200 ft. shipbuilding basin (the Graving Dock) located at the Sparrows Point Shipyard/Industrial Complex, Sparrows Point , MD to Senesco Marine, North Kingstown, RI. The lease involves the construction of the barge portion of the ATB, is effective Tuesday, November 15 for a period of approximately 13 months and, according to Senesco Marine representatives, is expected to bring in excess of 120 new employees to the Shipyard. Initial work on the tug portion of the barge took place at Quonset Point Shipyard, North Kingstown, RI, but could not be completed there due to space limitations.
