Roger Blough Salvage Underway
Salvage divers from DonJon-Smit plan to begin an underwater survey of the hull of 833-foot U.S. cargo vessel Roger Blough, which ran aground Friday afternoon on Gros Cap Reef in Whitefish Bay in Lake Superior. The divers aim to identify any damage the freighter may have sustained during the grounding. The U.S. Coast Guard said it continues to monitor and respond to the motor vessel, along with Canadian partners and company representatives. A preventative booming was put in place, though the Coast Guard believes there is minimal chance of a fuel spill.
Freighter Runs Aground in Lake Superior
The U.S. Coast Guard informs it is continuing to monitor and respond to the 833-foot U.S. cargo vessel Roger Blough, which ran aground Friday afternoon on Gros Cap Reef in Whitefish Bay in Lake Superior. The chance of a fuel spill is minimal and flooding on the vessel is stable, the Coast Guard said. The Roger Blough crew is said to be in good condition with no reported injuries. Plans to free the grounded freighter continue to progress through the combined efforts of Canadian partners, company representatives and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Coast Guard Medevac Injured Man from Motor Vessel
The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a medical evacuation, Monday morning, of an injured man aboard a motor vessel in the vicinity of Marinette, Wis. At about 8:45 a.m., the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay was notified via a shipboard radio of an injured man aboard the motor vessel Sikuliaq, a 254-foot U.S.-flagged research vessel, which the cutter's crew was escorting through the ice at the time. The vessel was 200 yards from the pier, and due to the Mobile Bay's superior maneuverability in the ice, the crew was able to break ice around the Sikuliaq before launching a small boat crew to tend to the injured man and take him to shore. The injured man was transferred to emergency medical services personnel and taken to the Bay Area Medical Facility in Marinette. uscgnews.com
Great Lakes Shipyard Replaces Propulsion Controls on USCG Cutter
Great Lakes Shipyard is completing the replacement of the main propulsion control system on the United States Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay. This work marks the final installation under a five-year contract with the USCG’s Engineering Logistics Center, Baltimore, Md. This contract included installation of new main propulsion control systems for the entire fleet of nine 140-foot Bay Class of Ice Breaking tugs. The Shipyard’s mobile vessel crew is conducting the work on-site in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and is to be completed in early October.
Goodtime III at Great Lakes Shipyard
Cleveland’s Goodtime III arrived at Great Lakes Shipyard earlier this month to undergo drydocking and repair work. The vessel received its five-year year US Coast Guard hull and machinery inspection and had its hull repainted. Great Lakes Shipyard has performed work on the previous Cleveland-based excursion boats, Goodtime and Goodtime II. United States Coast Guard Cutter MOBILE BAY of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin departed Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio after completion of drydocking and repairs to the bow thruster on it 120-foot Aids to Navigation Barge. The barge was hauled out on Monday, September 17th using the Shipyard’s 770-ton Marine Travelift. The shipyard immediately removed the bow thruster and disassembled it in the shop for repairs.
