Coast Guard Searching for 2 People East of Jupiter Inlet
The Coast Guard continues to search Tuesday for two missing people 46 miles east of Jupiter Inlet.The two people missing are a Bahamian national, a suspected migrant smuggler, and a 9-year-old Haitian national.
Montauk’s Coast Guard Holds Change of Command
U.S. Crewmembers of U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Station Montauk held a change of command and retirement ceremony in Montauk, N.Y., Thursday. Capt. Edward J. Cubanski, commander, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, presided over the ceremony to transfer command of Station Montauk from Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason Walter to Senior Chief Petty Officer Eric Best. Best comes to Montauk after recently serving as the executive petty officer of Station Gulfport, Miss. Walter retired after serving 20 years in the USCG.
Coast Guard Responds to NY Plane Crash
The Coast Guard launched a multi-asset response on Jan. 15 when a passenger plane plunged into the Hudson River here. Upon initial notification, Coast Guard Sector New York launched a fleet of small rescue boats and the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Ridley, based in Montauk. Once on scene, the crews distributed life jackets. Three helicopters from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., and one from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., also launched. Initial estimates are that the Coast Guard rescued 35 people, and took them to a medical staging area at the Chelsea piers. The plane is reportedly stabilized and a salvage team is en route to begin work on removing it from the water. The Escanaba, a 270-foot cutter from Boston, patrolling offshore, was diverted and is expected to arrive early Friday.
Damaged Dredge New York Moved
The 200-foot dredge vessel, the New York, completed necessary minimum repairs to its damaged hull enabling it to be moved to the Brooklyn Navy Yard in Brooklyn, N.Y., on February 2. The hull was damaged following a collision with the 669-foot freight ship the Orange Sun, north of Shooters Island in Newark Bay, N.J., at about 1:50 p.m. Jan. 24, 2008. Workers from Randive Incorporated installed a steel framed box in the winch room reinforcing the hull and allowing for more stability. Contracted divers also removed and made minor repairs to the dredge vessel's three spuds. The spuds were damaged from the impact of the collision and were holding the vessel in the ground. The repairs needed to make the vessel capable of transit to the Brooklyn Navy Yard took seven days.
