ORNL, Caterpillar Collaborate on Methanol as Fuel for Marine Engines

A collaboration between Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Caterpillar Inc. will investigate using methanol as an alternative fuel source for marine vessels.Members of the research team kicked off the project with the installation of a 6-cylinder engine at the Department of Energy’s National Transportation Research Center at ORNL.The ORNL and Caterpillar collaboration focuses on a four-stroke internal combustion marine engine that will be modified to run on methanol.Although methanol has many advantages, it is more difficult to ignite than diesel.

Perkins Marine Unveils Two New Auxiliary Engines

WinGD to Deliver Ammonia Engines in 2025

Swiss marine power company WinGD is on track to deliver its first X-DF-A dual-fuel ammonia engines by the first quarter of 2025, with the first X-DF-A powered vessels in service from 2026.The confirmation follows combustion tests at WinGD research facilities in December 2022 and is backed by concrete orders. As the maritime industry embarks on 'the path to zero', it is widely acknowledged that there is currently not a 'silver bullet' solution, nor is it likely that a solution will emerge from a vaccum. Collaboration is the path forward, and efforts such as MethanQuest offer promise.The project MethanQuest was launched in September 2018 with 29 partners from research, industry and the energy sector to work on processes for producing hydrogen and methane from renewables and for using them to achieve climate-neutral mobility and power generation.

MAN Launches 800 hp Light-Duty Workboat Engine

The MAN D2676 LE426 will be available in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. It fulfils the latest US EPA Tier 3 Commercial standard and comes with keel cooling.MAN Engines is expanding its range of engines for light-duty workboats in North America by introducing an 800 hp (588 kW) inline-six engine. The D2676 LE426 will be available from the second quarter of 2020. It satisfies the EPA Commercial emissions standards and offers 70 hp greater output than the well-established, 730 hp D2676 model.

Wärtsilä Power for Two New Tug Boats

The engines and steerable thrusters supplied by Wärtsilä are delivering for a pair of two new tug boats operated by the Turkish Directorate General of Coastal Safety. Following sea trials, the first vessel is already in operation, while the second will enter service in April 2019. The vessels were built in Eregli under project management by the Yutek shipyard and site team, and the orders with Wärtsilä were booked in 2017.The bollard pull rating for the tug boats has been certified by the Turkish Lloyd classification society as being 75 TBP.

Another Milestone for RRS Sir David Attenborough Build

Rolls-Royce is marking another milestone on the journey toward the completion of Britain’s new polar research vessel the RRS Sir David Attenborough being built by Merseyside shipyard Cammell Laird. The last of the vessel’s Bergen B33:45 engines/gensets have been craned into the ship’s hull at Cammell Laird ready to be connected to the RRS Sir David Attenborough’s Rolls-Royce propulsion system. The nine cylinder engines are carefully installed in three separate pieces. The first part of the nine cylinder engine to be craned into place was its double resilient foundation.

Two Windermere Cruise Vessels Repowered

Two passenger service vessels operating at one of the U.K.’s most popular visitor locations have been repowered as part of a regular maintenance program. Royston Power Generation, a long established and authorized Volvo Penta center, has supplied and installed new engines for two diesel motor vessels operated by Windermere Lake Cruises. As part of the works Royston fitted a new Volvo D5 engine to the Queen of the Lake, a traditional wooden launch built in 1949 and one of the oldest operating vessels on the lake. The new installation replaced an old Gardner engine.

Rolls-Royce Unveils MTU Gas Marine Engine

MTU’s new gas engine for commercial marine applications – the first from Rolls-Royce – has undergone some 3,000 hours on the test bench and is now ready to enter series production as the first high-speed pure-gas marine engine. “We can now confirm that the engine meets both our requirements and those of our customers: its performance and its acceleration behavior are similar to the excellent characteristics of a diesel engine,” said Dr. Ulrich Dohle, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG.

New Auxiliary Power Unit from John Deere

John Deere Power Systems (JDPS) will exhibit an auxiliary power unit equipped with a PowerTech Plus 9.0L industrial diesel engine that meets U.S. EPA Marine Tier 3 emissions regulations at the International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans. The PowerTech 6090HF485 is a radiator-cooled, dry-exhaust-manifold auxiliary engine that is ideal for powering a variety of deck auxiliaries including pumps, winches, cranes, hydraulics and generators. The engine is part of a full lineup that meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Marine Tier 3 emissions regulations for U.S.

Further Developed Gas Engines from Liebherr

Cummins Debuts Mobile Tier 4 Generators

Cummins’ certified Tier 4 Final QSB7 and QSL9 engine platforms form the basis for mobile generator sets that meet EPA regulations without diesel particulate filters (DPF).

U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final certified mobile generator sets with 150 kW to 275 kW power outputs are now available from Cummins Power Generation for the rental market. Cummins said it conducted extensive field research to develop a reliable, easy to operate and versatile product to meet the latest emissions regulations. The mobile generators have been thoroughly validated and are now available to rental operators and customers. The new units are based on the Cummins QSB7 and QSL9 engine platforms that have undergone extensive refinements to meet the stringent EPA Tier 4 Final regulations.

MAN Extends High Speed Power Range

MAN announced it will present a newly developed 12-cylinder V-engine for use in working vessels at the SMM 2014 trade fair in Hamburg, Germany. Workboat with MAN EPA Tier 3 Engine Launched in the US

Laborde Repowers RO RO Cargo Carriers

The on-time delivery of freight is something businesses depend on to be successful. That's why Laborde Products recently put a second pair of Mitsubishi engines in service in Nassau, Bahamas for the Ro Ro Company. This company carries cargo throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean. The first boat repowered was the 165' KCT, which has a pair of Mitsubishi S6R-Y2MPTK engines rated 630 hp at 1,600 rpm installed. The second vessel, the 190' Vi-Nais, has a pair of S6R2-MPTK2 engines rated 927 hp at 1,400 rpm installed.

ABC: Powering Up for the Next 100 Years

Man's High Speed Engines with Latest Technology

MAN is presenting the D2868 LE421 and LE422, a fully classifiable marine diesel engine for medium and heavy duty applications. In order to fulfill the emission standards, the high speed engine from Nuremberg, uses the latest Common Rail technology. MTU Boosts Series 8000 Engine Power

Series 8000 marine diesel  engines from Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH now available with an output of 10MW. Previously, the 20-cylinder engine had a maximum output of 9,100kW. The IMO Tier II-compliant unit demonstrated its increased power and reliability during a project-specific endurance run over 1,500 hours under tropical conditions. The Series 8000 engines now cover a power range from 7,200kW to 10,000kW enabling MTU to offer economically efficient, diesel-based propulsion solutions producing up to 40MW per vessel.

A double-hulled tanker called Bernhard Dettmer refuels ships in Hamburg Harbor – power supply on board is provided by a Hatz SilentPACK diesel engine. It is end of the working day. Calm returns on board the Bernhard Dettmer, although the diesel engine is running, supplying the ship with power. There is no noise, however, because the engine is running very quietly. This is one of the outstanding features of the Hatz 4L41C SilentPACK engine. The Bernhard Dettmer is a double-hulled tanker, which is used as a bunkering vessel in Hamburg Harbor. Built in 2008, it is 100 m long and 9.50 m wide.
