Volvo Penta Tier 3 Heavy-Duty Engine

The new Volvo Penta D13 MH for medium- and heavy-duty marine commercial applications is a powerful and fuel-efficient Tier 3 engine. This 13-liter diesel engine combines the best of two worlds: the exceptional durability, low fuel consumption and minimal emissions that come from its automotive background and the high torque and power brought by the thorough marinization. D13 MH is available in five models with outputs from 400 to 600 hp. “The focus when developing the D13 MH was to offer a Tier 3-compliant marine diesel engine that also had lower fuel consumption, more power-to-volume and even higher durability than the current D12,” said Gerard Törneman at Volvo Penta. High torque at low rpm is a Volvo Penta hallmark and the D13 excels here.

Volvo Penta D13 MG Marine Genset Engine

The new Volvo Penta D13 MG marine genset offers more power and high load acceptance, with emission levels in compliance with EPA Tier 3 and low fuel consumption. The secret is the advanced technology Volvo Penta uses throughout the engine. As with all Volvo Penta marine gensets, the D13 MG is delivered complete with electric generator and onboard electronics, tested and classified. “The D13 MG is better in every respect, compared to the current D12, which also is a very good engine,” says Gerard Törneman at Volvo Penta. Fuel cost alone is a very high portion of a marine genset life-cycle cost.

The Mercurius Shipping Group, located in , launched a new concept for an inland waterway vessel, called the “M-factor”. The vessel is powered by Volvo Penta marine diesel engines both for propulsion and bowthruster. The ship measures 279 x 31.4 ft.,and has a load capacity of 1500 tons, which is in fact a “small” ship nowadays but with an exceptional big cargo hold. Due to the size of the ship and the limited heights, it can sail in almost all European inland waterways. Since it…

Volvo Penta D12 Allows for Reduced Operating Expenses

Northern Norway has a large fleet of small and mid-size boats for commercial operations, for example, passenger boats, car ferries and a multitude of fishing boats. These are boats that operate year around and that at regular intervals need to replace their engines. A new engine is a large investment, but with the reduced operating expenses for the D12 the investment has quickly been made profitable. The high-speed passenger boat MF Sjösprint was equipped at the end of last year with twin D12s for propulsion. The fuel consumption is now approx. 30 percent lower compared with the old engine, while at the same time performance has improved. Noise and vibrations are also significantly lower with the D12 engines. The MF Flatöy car ferry installed a D12 last May.

Volvo Penta Introduces D12 Heavy Duty Unit

Volvo Penta introduced the D12 Heavy Duty diesel engine, a 12-liter marine diesel that, with totally electronic control, is the first of a new generation of engines for heavy commercial operations. The D12s new electronics are designed to provide more efficient combustion with improved performance, and lower fuel consumption. The D12 is an in-line, six-cylinder marine diesel feature unit injectors, EDC system, and a sturdy basic design which includes a seven bearing crankshaft. "The electronics system used in the engine is one very important reason for the engine's high operating safety and reliability," said Anders Hard, a D12 project leader with Volvo Penta. The new engines is totally electronic, with the Electronic Diesel Control system.
