Daewoo Shipping and Marine Engineering Posts Q3 Loss

The South Korean shipbuilding major Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has posted a net loss in the third quarter from a year earlier due to one-off losses.According to a stock exchange announcement by the world’s second-largest shipbuilder by orders, the net loss reached 323.9 billion won (US$285.1 million) in the three months ending Sept. 30 from a net profit of 74.9 billion won during the same period last year.DSME's operating profit in the third quarter fell 9.6 percent on-year to 177.0 billion won (US$156.29 million).Revenue declined 9.2 percent to 2.20 trillion won and net loss came in at 323.9 billion won turning to red from a year ago.A Yonhap report said that DSME blamed the net loss on its sale of Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries.In July…

MAN D&T Scoops 11 MSC Vessel Order

MAN Diesel & Turbo has won the order from MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company for 11 × 23,000 TEU container vessels equipped with 11 × MAN B&W 11G95ME-C9.5 main engines. Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) will construct six of the vessels while Daewoo Shipping Marine Engineering (DSME) will construct the remainder. Bjarne Foldager, Vice President – Sales & Promotion, Two-Stroke Business – MAN Diesel & Turbo, said: “This order underlines the positive, long-term business relationship between MSC and MAN Diesel & Turbo. The ‘G’ prefix before an MAN B&W engine means it has a design with an ultra-long stroke that reduces engine speed, thereby paving the way for ship designs with unprecedented high-efficiency. G-type engines’ longer stroke results in a lower rpm for the engine driving the propeller.

Dorian Completes Acquisition of Scorpio VLGC Fleet

Dorian LPG Ltd. announced that it has  concluded its agreement with Scorpio Tankers Inc. to acquire its Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) newbuilding contracts, associated deposits of $83.1 million, and a cash contribution of $1.9 million in exchange for 39.9 million newly issued Dorian LPG shares representing 30% of the Company's pro-forma outstanding shares. Concurrent with the completion of the transaction between Dorian LPG and Scorpio Tankers, Dorian LPG has also closed its subscription for its private placement of 80,405,405 shares to Norwegian and international institutional investors at a price of NOK 18.50 which represents approximately $250 million in gross proceeds. The Company now has 213,579,150 shares issued and outstanding.

Hyundai Heavy, Nigeria to Set up LNG Shipping Firm

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world's biggest shipbuilder, said on Wednesday it will set up a shipping firm with Nigeria's state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. (NNPC) to deliver liquefied natural gas. Hyundai will own 49 percent stake in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) joint venture shipping company, to be named Nigeria Korea Marine (NIKORMA) Transport Ltd., while NNPC will own 51 percent. The shipbuilder will eventually deliver crude and oil products after initially focusing on LNG, Hyundai said. Earlier this year, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. said it will set up a similar shipping firm with NNPC, a joint venture called Nigeria Daewoo Shipping Ltd., which will transport merchant goods, crude oil and petroleum products. Daewoo Shipbuilding Wins $500m Deal

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co. said it has won a $500m order to build five container ships for a German shipping company. The deal calls for Daewoo Shipbuilding to deliver the ships, which can hold 4,700 20-foot standard containers, to Hamburg Sud, one of the largest ship lines, by 2010, the company said. The vessels will be built at Daewoo Shipping's yard in Romania, it said. (Yonhap)

Daewoo, NNPC Form Joint Shipping Venture

DSME and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) have signed a Joint Venture Agreement to establish a world class shipping company. The shipping joint venture company will be called Nigeria Daewoo Shipping Ltd. (NIDAS). The scope of NIDAS will be local and international transportation of merchant goods, crude oil and petroleum products. The initial capital of NIDAS will be $10 million. The equity interests of DSME and NNPC in the shipping company will be 49% and 51% respectively. The joint venture will also have an offshore office which will be responsible for vessel operations and logistics. DSME has clear mid and long term goals and expects to fully participate in the oil and gas activities including the energy sector through its involvement in NIDAS.

Daewoo Forms Joint Venture with Nigerian National Petroleum

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co Ltd will enter the shipping business by forming a joint venture company with Nigerian National Petroleum Co, Daewoo Shipbuilding said. The joint venture, tentatively named Nigeria Daewoo Shipping Ltd, will have a capital base of 10 mln usd, with Daewoo Shipbuilding owning 51 pct and Nigerian National Petroleum the rest, Daewoo Shipbuilding said. NNPC, Daewoo in Joint Venture

After over five decades of its involvement in crude oil and gas exploration without involving in crude oil transportation, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has signed a joint venture agreement with Daewoo Ship-building and Marine Engineering (DSME) of South Korea, to establish a world class shipping company which will be involved in crude oil transportation. Already, $10 million has been released as the initial capital for the joint venture business, which would be called Nigera-Daewoo Shipping Ltd (NIDAS).
