MV Celine, the world’s largest short sea Ro-Ro ship, will today be christened in a ceremony at Dublin Port with guest of honour, An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD, Godmother to the new ship, Geraldine O’Reilly, and the port’s chaplains. The formal ceremony is a long-held tradition intended to bring good fortune to the ship and involves breaking a champagne bottle against the hull as the ship is christened. To mark today’s occasion, new Irish music commissioned by Dublin Port and performed by John Sheahan of the Dubliners and Colm Mac Con Iomaire of the Frames will premiere at the ceremony, heralding the ship’s naming in front of invited guests representing her Luxembourg-based owner CLdN and the wider European shipping industry.

Trafigura Beheer BV, an  international commodities trading and logistics company, has announced that it has joined forces with the global bulk-liquid transportation, storage and distribution services firm, Stolt-Nielsen Limited, to develop a new bitumen distribution centre at Stolthaven Terminals’ Dagenham site, east of London. Trafigura is expecting to invest a minimum of GBP 15 million over ten years in this significant long-term bitumen storage arrangement. Stolt-Nielsen Limited announced that Finanstilsynet (The Financial Supervisory Authority of Norway) has completed a review of certain aspects of the company's consolidated financial statements for 2012. The company agreed to reverse $12.3 million of the non-cash gains on bargain purchase relating to the Acuidoro and Moerdijk acquisitions completed during 2012. The non-cash gain on bargain purchase of $4.8 million relating to the Dagenham acquisition has not been reversed. Reference is made to Note 1 to the Condensed Consolidated Interim Financial Statements for the three months and year ended November 30, 2013 released on January 30, 2014.

Stolt-Nielsen Limited (Oslo Børs: SNI) announced today that it reached an agreement to acquire a bulk-liquid storage terminal at Dagenham, Port of London, UK, from Norbert Dentressangle SA. The completion of the acquisition is subject to the transfer of licenses and permits, and the receipt of necessary approvals to operate the facility. The transaction is expected to close during the Company's fourth quarter of 2012. Further terms were not disclosed. The terminal occupies 9.4 hectares and consists of 195 tanks with a total capacity of 134,000 cbm and a jetty with a draft of 9.3 meters. In addition to bulk-liquid storage, services include warehousing, drumming and bulk container filling, laboratory services, blending, dilution and product heating.

In the UK’s Snaresbrook Crown Court on Nov. 19, Captain Gonchar Volodymyr aged 53, was sentenced to two months in jail, and will be deported upon completion of the sentence after pleading guilty to being the Master of a ship whilst being over the alcohol limit. On the 4th November 2008, Gonchar Volodymyr, a Ukrainian, was Master of the Cypriot registered chemical tanker; Elousa Trikoukiotisa bound for London from Rostock in Northern Germany. The vessel was laden with Ammonium Nitrate in liquid form and had a crew of 15 on board.

At a hearing yesterday in Folkestone Magistrates Court, the owner of a coaster pleaded guilty to three Merchant Shipping safety offences following a collision with the East Goodwin Light Vessel on 27th February 2007. The Antigua and Barbuda registered coaster, Jerome H, was on passage from Dagenham in Essex to Belfast in Northern Ireland. In the early hours of the 27th February 2007, the vessel struck the East Goodwin Light Vessel. The collision seriously damaged the light vessel which had to be removed from station for repairs. The Jerome H continued on to Belfast. Investigations showed that the Mate was alone on the bridge. He had been doing paperwork on an aft facing desk in the moments leading up to the collision.
