Diesel-Electric Units Prepared for Navy’s AGOR Project

During most of 2012 Cummins Northwest was busy with the procurement of the various subsystems and assembly of the diesel-electric units for the two Ocean Class Auxiliary General Purpose Oceanographic Research (AGOR) vessels building at Dakota Creek Shipyards. The company delivered the first four-unit ship set in January of this year. Seattle-based Guido Perla & Associates, Inc. has done the design work for the two vessels. Four Cummins QSK38-DM powered electrical generators will provide power for each of these 238 x 50-ft. vessels.

Crowley Contracts for Large, Fast ATBs

Maritime Corporation's Vessel Management Services subsidiary has signed a contract with VT Halter Marine Inc. and Dakota Creek Shipyards to build three articulated tug-barge (ATB), 330,000-barrel tank vessels, the largest in the company's history and the fastest in their class. Dakota Creek will build the 16,320-horsepower tugs in its Anacortes, Wash., shipyard. New Ferry Gets Name: Snohomish

The so-called "Son of Chinook" finally has a formal name: Snohomish. That's the name given to the new passenger-only ferry, now being built at Dakota Creek Shipyards in Anacortes. The state Transportation Commission selected the name from a list of prospects. Helping the cause was enthusiastic support from both Snohomish city and county officials, who sent letters supporting the proposal. The new Snohomish will join its sister ship, Chinook, on Puget Sound. Meanwhile, dock trials for the new Jumbo Mark II ferry Puyallup are scheduled after slight delays. Crews at Todd Shipyard have started installing furniture, painting the exterior and car deck, and adding other finishing touches on the ferry.

Snohomish is Launched

Washington State Ferries' newest ferry Snohomish was launched last month. It is now undergoing last-minute installations and sea trials before officially entering service on the Seattle/Bremerton route. The sleek ferry is the sister ship of Chinook, already in service on the Seattle/Bremerton route. With a few minor exceptions - the biggest being a new bow configuration so it can front load at auto ferry slips - Snohomish is a replica of Chinook. According to Snohomish County Councilman Rick Larsen, the ferry's name comes from one of the region's Native American tribes, symbolizing a connection to the past. And as a passenger-only ferry, it represents the commitment to a regional transportation system, particularly to practical alternatives to driving alone.
