Singapore Conducts Chemical Spill Drill

To test and demonstrate Singapore’s readiness to tackle oil and chemical spills, a multi-agency joint chemical spill exercise was conducted on Friday. Organized by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) the exercise took place at the conclusion of the 10th International Chemical and Oil Pollution Conference & Exhibition (ICOPCE), held in conjunction with the Singapore Maritime Week 2017. ChemSpill 2017 comprised a tabletop management exercise at MPA's Port Operations Control Centre Vista and a full scale chemical and oil spill response equipment deployment. A total of 150 personnel from 25 agencies participated in the table top exercise and seaward exercise, located along Raffles Reserved Anchorage.

Crystal Charters Escort Vessel for Arctic Cruise

When cruise liner Crystal Serenity sets off on its 32-day expedition voyage through the Northwest Passage from Anchorage to New York August 16, she will be escorted by the RRS Ernest Shackleton. Crystal Cruises recently secured RRS Ernest Shackleton for the voyage via a charter party agreement with Tactical Marine Solutions of Victoria, Canada and British Antarctic Survey (BAS) headquartered in Cambridge, U.K. Under the contract, RRS Ernest Shackleton, an ICE 05 classed icebreaker (exceeding the more common 1A Super class)…

Tanker Fire Kills One off Oregon

An engine room fire last week aboard a 485-foot, Bahamian-flagged chemical tanker has left the vessel disabled without propulsions about 700 miles west of Cape Blanco, Oregon, killing one crew member, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported. According to the USCG, the fire was extinguished using installed firefighting systems, however, the ship sustained damage to its generators, leaving the crew with minimal battery power. USCG air and cutter forces were called in to assist the tanker’s 22-person crew.

Clean Sweep for Alex Haley Crew

The Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley and crew returned home Wednesday evening following a six-week deployment to Puget Sound, where the crew underwent a challenging period of training and evaluation. The ship first stopped in Seattle, where a large part of the crew completed team firefighting and damage control courses where crewmembers learned fire-fighting techniques and had to control flooding in a tank made to simulate an engineering space on a sinking ship. With almost 60 of the 100-person crew on their first assignment to a ship, the learning curve was steep at times. Following this training the ship sailed north to Naval Station Everett Washington and began a rigorous three-week Tailored Ship’s Training Availability (TSTA).

USS San Antonio (LPD 17) in Production

The Navy’s newest amphibious ship, the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio is in production. USS San Antonio is the first ship of 12 amphibious ships that will support the Marine Corps’ landing forces and embarked Marines in forward presence operations throughout the world. Designed to fully support Marine Corps missions involving amphibious or expeditionary maneuver warfare, as well as special operations, the ship has a flight deck for aircraft and a well deck for landing craft or tracked amphibious vehicles. Each ship can carry 720 Marines, land them by Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicles, or fly them to their objective areas in a variety of helicopters or vertical take-off and landing aircraft. At 684 in length, 105 ft.

USS Kearsarge Completes Sea Trials

USS KEARSARGE, At Sea (NNS) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) completed a successful three-day sea trials March 14, following major repairs to No. 2 low pressure turbine and an extensive maintenance availability period. In preparation for the sea trials event, the Kearsarge crew, Commander Naval Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center technicians, and various contractors, spent thousands of man-hours completing equipment repairs and maintenance.
