Cattle Offloaded from Disabled Livestock Carrier
The livestock carrier Nine Eagle suffered a major engine failure in the Port of Darwin, Australia, on May 15, while loaded with approximately 1,800 cattle.The Nine Eagle, built in 2006, is a converted general cargo ship currently flagged by Panama. The vessel was headed to Indonesia on charter for Perth-based company Livestock Shipping Services.The sourcing of parts to repair the engine is taking longer than anticipated, so the cattle were unloaded on May 21 and transported to a Pre-export Quarantine Facility where they will remain subject to biosecurity control until they can be exported.As well as animal welfare concerns, the ABC reports that the accumulation of manure onboard was a factor in the decision to unload the animals.
US-Australia Naval Drill TS17 is Underway
The Royal Australian and United States navies have proven a potent and agile force when operating together during the opening phases of Exercise TALISMAN SABER 17, which took place in the Northern Territory. HMA Ships Ballarat, Melbourne, Broome and Bathurst conducted four days of high-end warfare exercises with USS John S. McCain off the coast of Darwin, proving their ability to detect, track and engage surface, submarine, and air targets. BAM Clough And SAL To Move LNG & LPG Product Loading Platforms
SAL Heavy Lift GmbH, through its wholly owned Singapore subsidiary, SAL Heavy Lift Singapore Pte Ltd, has signed a major new contract with Australia's BAM Clough Joint Venture for shipping and deployment of LNG and LPG product loading platforms for the INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG Project, near Darwin, Australia. BAM Clough is delivering the Product Loading Jetty and Module Offloading Facility packages of works for the Project’s onshore LNG facilities under subcontracts awarded by engineering, procurement and construction contractor JKC Australia LNG Pty Ltd. The two platforms, being built in Batam, Indonesia, will be among the largest structures ever handled by a heavy lift vessel. The LNG platform will weigh in at a hefty 1,080 tonnes with dimensions of 40 x 39 x 8 metres.
Pacific Naval Exercise Fleet 2,000-Personnel Strong Sets Sail
Fifteen ships with about 2,000 Defence personnel from seven Pacific nations set sail from Darwin Harbour for the military training Exercise Kakadu. Maritime elements from Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand will focus on aspects of maritime warfare common to all the forces involved. Over the 19 days of exercising, from 29 August to 14 September, graduated training activities and weapons practices are being conducted, including warfare and maritime security exercises and evolutions.
Alfa Laval’s PureBallast for Australian Navy
Alfa Laval has sold more than thirty PureBallast systems in the last year. One of the most prominent orders is one that involves two PureBallast systems for the Royal Australian Navy. The two Australian systems, which will be the first PureBallast installations for naval use, will be fitted aboard the Australian LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) vessels to be built by Spanish shipyard Navantia Ferrol. The first PureBallast system for the Royal Australian Navy was delivered in mid-December last year, with the second system to follow in April 2010.
