NYK Group, Dualog, NTT Group Join Partnership for Onboard IoT Platform

The Japanese shipping group NYK Group (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, MTI Co., Ltd.) will collaborate with Dualog and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) Group on a vessel platform proposal that is currently being validated with ship information systems (SIMS) data, the companies announced. The experiment is focused on validation of the below technology, which is expected to benefit the maritime industry in actual sea operations: Data gathering from an expanding array of onboard sensors and monitoring equipment, Remote distribution and management of onboard applications and Monitoring of ship equipment, event analyses, and intelligent alerts.

NYK Aims at Developing New Shipping and Logistics Solution

Tokyo-based shipping line NYK Group (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) has decided to establish a new company, Symphony Creative Solutions (SCS) in Singapore, to develop and market new solutions in the shipping and logistics fields. NYK, along with its subsidiaries, the Monohakobi Technology Institute and NYK Business Systems, has teamed up with Weathernews and Kozo Keikaku Engineering for the new venture to further the development of the Symphony Project. Six leaders and influencers from across the shipping industry will join global NGO Carbon War Room’s (CWR’s) Shipping Operation Advisory Board. Their backgrounds span the shipowning, chartering, technical analysis, finance, and academic worlds. The board will lend extensive industry insight and support CWR’s mission to profitably decarbonise the international shipping industry. ClassNK Begins Testing CBM System

ClassNK has commenced verification tests of its next-generation condition-based monitoring (CBM) system ClassNK CMAXS e-GICSX for Mitsui’s MAN B&W engines. The system is being jointly developed by ClassNK, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. and the verification test is being conducted on a MOL-managed vessel with the cooperation of Mitsui O.S.K. ClassNK, Makita Expand Engine Monitoring

ClassNK and Makita have agreed to bring the condition-based engine monitoring system ClassNK CMAXS e-GICSX to Mitsui-Makita MAN B&W main engines. The system assists in the early detection of abnormalities in electrically controlled diesel engines and is being developed in collaboration with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding. Its development comes in response to the rise in the number of vessels being equipped with fuel-efficient electronically controlled diesel engines that allow large amounts of sensor data to be obtained. The increasing amount of data creates more workload for many shipping companies therefore a system that can analyze the automated sensors is needed.

NYK Opens New Planning Center in Kumamoto

On September 1, 2014, NYK and Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc. established a stowage planning center for container shipping at the Kumamoto office of Kozo Keikaku Engineering Inc. in Ozu town, Kumamoto prefecture, Japan. The task of container stowage planning will be transferred from NYK’s office in Singapore by the end of March 2015. The new center in Kumamoto will play a central role in the stowage planning of NYK’s containerships in the Asian region, in addition to cooperation with container terminals at calling ports. ClassNK, IHIMU, DU, and IBM Japan to Develop Software

ClassNK, IHI Marine United (IHIMU), Diesel United (DU) and IBM Japan have announced they will jointly develop a ship maintenance management system to help reduce ship lifecycle cost. The jointly developed system, which will make use of the latest condition monitoring sensor technology and data analysis systems, will be offered by ClassNK as a cloud-based service to shipowners, managers and operators from June 2013.
