BMT CEO Sarah Kenny is Maritime UK Vice Chair

Maritime UK has confirmed the appointment of Sarah Kenny as Vice Chair. Kenny is CEO at BMT Global.Maritime UK is the sector’s umbrella body, bringing together the shipping, ports, services, engineering and leisure marine industries to drive growth by promoting the sector, influencing government and fostering collaboration. The sector supports just under 1 million jobs and contributes around GBP40bn to GDP.Kenny will start her two-year terms on 1 December. Current Chair, David Dingle has served since 2015.Dingle, the Carnival UK Chair, announced the appointments at Maritime UK’s ‘Maritime Masters’ reception at Clarksons Platou this afternoon (Thursday), which was attended by HRH The Princess Royal, Maritime UK’s Patron.

British Ports Association Calls for ‘Frictionless’ Brexit

The British Ports Association has published a new strategic report - ‘A Brexit Dividend’, which calls on the UK Government to deliver on the Prime Minister’s pledge of ‘frictionless’ trade after Brexit. Following Monday's (March 19) agreement between UK and EU negotiators on the terms of a transition deal and ahead of the EU Council meeting later this week, the British Ports Association has published ‘A Brexit Dividend’. Ports are calling for a pragmatic deal with the EU on both customs and regulatory recognition that allows both British and European businesses to get their goods across borders as quickly as possible. ‘A Brexit Dividend’ outlines the potential opportunities for ports.

Shoreham Port supporting Women in Maritime

Shoreham Port is part of a high-level Taskforce, established by Maritime UK, to work collaboratively with other businesses in the industry to promote women in the maritime sector. The first meeting took place on 21st February in London and was very well attended. The Taskforce aims to identify practical steps to increase the number of women in the industry and is committed to addressing fairness, equality and inclusion within the sector. The UK Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani MP joined the first meeting, demonstrating government support for the initiative. Nusrat said “This Taskforce will be crucial in opening up the wealth of career opportunities in the maritime industry to women around the country.

First Women in Maritime Taskforce Meeting Held

UK Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani MP joined the first meeting of maritime sector's new Women in Maritime Taskforce, demonstrating government support for the initiative. At the meeting she said: “This task force will be crucial in opening up the wealth of career opportunities in the maritime industry to women around the country. “The UK has one of the most competitive maritime sectors in the world and with only 3% of the workforce being women, it is vital more take advantage of the exciting opportunities the sector has to offer. Maritime UK – the umbrella body for the UK’s shipping, ports, business services, engineering and leisure marine industries – has established a Taskforce to address fairness, equality and inclusion within the maritime sector.

Women in Maritime: New UK Taskforce Established

Setting out to increase fairness, equality and inclusion within the maritime sector, Maritime UK has established a Women in Maritime Taskforce, a move welcomed by the U.K.’s new Maritime Minister, Nusrat Ghani MP. “I am delighted to see Maritime UK taking action to attract more women into our maritime industries, and I welcome this taskforce as an important first step,” said Ghani, who is only the second woman to hold the Department for Transport portfolio for the U.K.’s £40 billion maritime sector.

Maritime Moves 95% of UK's Global Trade

The Maritime sector makes a substantive macroeconomic contribution to the UK through turnover, Gross Value Added (GVA), employment and through the compensation of employees., says a report by Maritime UK, which is  commissioned the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR)  to estimate the value of the UK maritime sector. The CEBR findings were formally launched in Parliament on Wednesday 13 September 2017 by Maritime Minister, Rt Hon John Hayes MP, Chair of International Trade select committee, Angus MacNeil MP, former Maritime Minister Jim Fitzpatrick MP and Maritime UK Chairman David Dingle. It is estimated that the sector directly supported just over GBP 40 billion in business turnover, GBP14.5 billion in GVA and 185,700 jobs for UK employees in 2015.

UK Shipping Industry Takes its Cause to Government

The UK Chamber of Shipping's CEO Guy Platten and its president Dr Grahaeme Henderson were among a delegation of international shipowners and major figures from the shipping industry that visited 10 Downing Street on Monday as part of London International Shipping Week 2017. Meyer Werft Begins LNG Cruise Ship Build for AIDA

German shipbuilder Meyer Werft has laid the keel for AIDAnova, set to become the first cruise ship worldwide that will operate both at sea and in port fueled with liquefied natural gas (LNG). Maritime UK on Brexit Negotiations

As negotiations begin on the UK's departure from the European Union, David Dingle CBE, Chairman of Maritime UK said: "These are the most critical set of negotiations in a lifetime. “Above all, we need free trade with Europe as well as the rest of the world, enabling our sector to perform its unique and fundamental role in facilitating UK global trade. “A cross-party agreement on Brexit would be a powerful tool to demonstrate a united front in the negotiations. Negotiating such an agreement would mean that the final deal had the widespread support of the British people, and more likely be signed off by Parliament. Our negotiating partners would therefore take the negotiations more seriously, providing certainty and stability, allowing industry to get on with its job.

Is 'Seablindness' a Myth?

UK politicians and the general public have demonstrated overwhelmingly that they recognize shipping as the biggest mover of the nation’s imports and exports, according to a new study commissioned by the UK Chamber of Shipping. Guy Platten, CEO of the UK Chamber of Shipping, said of the study: “The findings confirm that we can forget about so-called ‘seablindness’ – it just does not exist. Leading pollster Comres surveyed 2,026 members of the British public and 127 UK MPs during the first four months of this year. Respondents were asked to name the mode of transport that carries the largest proportion of import and export cargo to/from the UK.

Countdown to London International Shipping Week

The countdown to London International Shipping Week 2017 (LISW17) officially began last night with an exclusive launch reception held at the iconic Norton Rose Fulbright building on London’s South Bank. The launch reception brought together representatives from many of the maritime world’s leading organisations and figures from UK Government to learn of the aspirations, plans and exciting opportunities that LISW17 will deliver between September 11-15, next year. Queen Names P&O Cruises' New Luxury Ship

Carnival Corporation & plc launched P&O Cruises UK’s newest ship, Britannia, in a naming ceremony held today in Southampton, England, to commemorate its entry into service for the P&O Cruises fleet. Christening the ship was Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, officially naming P&O Cruises’ new flagship. Britannia, the first of two new ships joining Carnival Corporation’s fleet in 2015, will be joined later this year by AIDA’s new flagship vessel, AIDAprima, when it begins regular service this fall.

Britannia sails into Southampton

Britain's newest ever superliner Britannia has arrived in its home port Southampton ahead of its official naming ceremony. It’s the largest cruise ship built for the British market. It will bear the same name as the Queen's former Royal Yacht Britannia, which was decommissioned in 1997 after more than 50 years of service. The Queen will officially name the vessel in Southampton on 10 March. Capable of carrying more than 3,600 passengers and 1,350 crew, the 1,082-ft long vessel is the largest cruise ship designed specifically for the British holiday market. Boasting 15 passenger decks, 13 bars and 13 places to eat, the £473 million Britannia has a three-tier atrium, a 936-seater theatre, four swimming pools, and a multi-million pound art collection.

Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, will name the new P&O Cruises vessel Britannia in Southampton on March 10, 2015, P&O Cruises announced. The naming will be a milestone in British maritime history and will be an event of great national interest. “We are honored and proud that Her Majesty will name Britannia almost 20 years after she named the P&O Cruises ship Oriana,” said Carnival UK chairman David Dingle. The biggest ship designed exclusively for Britain, Britannia is touted as P&O Cruises’ latest modern classic.

British Queen to Name New Ship

Queen Elizabeth II will christen P&O Cruises’ new flagship Britannia in Southampton, England, on March 10. She will be accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. The naming ceremony of the new 141,000-tonne cruise vessel will take place at Ocean Terminal in Southampton, England and will be of great national interest. David Dingle, Carnival’s UK chairman, gave the following statement: “We are honoured and proud that Her Majesty will name Britannia almost 20 years after she named the P&O Cruises’ ship Oriana. And in a celebration of all things British Her Majesty will use a sparkling wine from the Wiston Estate Winery in Sussex for the bottle smash moment and naming ceremony.

31st Edition of Cruise Shipping Miami

Cruise Shipping Miami 2015 is gearing up to offer the most comprehensive and robust roster of panel discussions featuring the industry's most knowledgeable and experienced executives. The panels will be grouped under several broad themes based on industry trends during the four-day conference. The 31st edition of Cruise Shipping Miami is scheduled for March 16-19 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Organized by UBM Connect, thematic topics include The Geography of Cruise Tourism, Safety and Ship Operations, Market Segments and Cruise Product Development. On Tuesday morning, March 17, the conference will open with the popular State of the Industry session. Participants in that plenary session will be announced in the coming weeks. Carnival UK Announces Executive Appointments

Carnival Corporation & plc announced that David Dingle has been appointed chairman of Carnival UK and David Noyes, currently executive vice president operations, has been promoted to the CEO role, with operating responsibility for the UK-based brands P&O Cruises and Cunard Line. Dingle and Noyes will take up their new roles on October 1, and will both report to Carnival Corporation & plc president and CEO Arnold Donald. “This moves allows us to strengthen further our overall leadership in the critically important UK marketplace, while also promoting from within to leverage the skills, experience and capabilities of our executive team,” Donald said.

German Shipyard Welcomes Cunard's QE to Dry-Dock

The cruise ship 'Queen Elizabeth', has arrived at the Blohm & Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, for her first scheduled dry-docking since she entered service in 2010, inform Cunard Line. “Queen Elizabeth is already a much loved ship and following this multi-million dollar refit, she is sure to shine brightly for years to come,” said David Dingle, CEO for Cunard Line. On the technical side, scrubber technology (exhaust gas cleaning system) is being installed in line with Cunard’s commitment to minimising the company’s environmental impact. In response to passenger demand and changing demographics, a total of nine new single staterooms are being created on Deck 2 midships by remodeling part of Queen Elizabeth’s casino.

Fincantieri Lay Keel for New P&O Cruises Flagship

The 400-tonne keel section for the cruise ship has been laid in the building dock at the Monfalcone shipyard in Italy. The 3,611 passenger vessel, due to be launched in March 2015, will be the flagship of the P&O Cruises fleet, as well as the largest ever constructed for the British market. The ceremony was attended, among others, by David Dingle, Carnival UK CEO, Carol Marlow, P&O Cruises Managing Director, Enrico Buschi, Fincantieri Chief Operating Officer, and Carlo De Marco, Manager of Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard.

At SMM 2010 ‘Green’ Technologies Center Stage

Last month MR’s Henrik Segercrantz traveled to Hamburg for an exclusive preview of the SMM 2010 exhibition. The SMM international trade fair for shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology will take place in Hamburg, Germany, on 7-10 September. This year much focus will be on environment-friendly technologies and products. The supporting program for SMM 2010 will for the first time this year include the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (gmec), and the Offshore Dialogue, which will also look into maritime technologies for offshore mining and wind farms.

Study: Cruise Contributes €10 billion in Europe

The buoyant cruise industry now accounts for more than a quarter of a million jobs in Europe, over €10 billion direct expenditure and 15 million visits to European ports. The results were unveiled by the European Cruise Council (ECC) at the industry’s second annual “European Cruise Contribution”. “This is the first time we’ve been able to compare annual trends and the impact of the cruise industry on European job creation, wealth and tourism,” said David Dingle, chairman of the ECC and chief executive officer of Carnival UK.
