Stena Line Inks Deal to Operate Birkenhead Terminal Until 2100

One of Europeā€™s largest ferry route and port operators, Stena Line, said it has signed a new deal with U.K. port operator Peel Ports to operate its 12 Quays port and ferry terminal in Birkenhead until the beginning of the 22nd Century. The Swedish company has operated twice daily ferry services to Belfast since 2011 and this new deal will see them continue to operate there for at least another 77 years, until 2100.The value of the deal has not been disclosed.Stena Line operates six routes and 12 vessels across the region and Birkenhead has been a key focus for investment in recent years.

UK Port Workers Plan Two-week Strike

More than 560 dockworkers at the Port of Liverpool, one of Britain's largest container ports, will go on strike from Sept. 19 to Oct. 3 over pay, the Unite union said on Friday, adding to a summer of industrial unrest caused by soaring inflation."Workers across the country are sick to death of being told to take a hit on their wages and living standards," Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said in a statement."MDHC needs to think again, table a reasonable offer and fulfil its previous pay promisesā€¦

MSC-Peel Ports Partner on Liverpool2 Trials

Marine-based commissioning work is now underway at Liverpool2, with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) committing vessel support to Peel Ports to help make the trial a success. Berthing and marine trials began last week with MV MSC Nederland and will be followed by a variety of cargo handling tests throughout July and August. As well as 3,007 TEU MV MSC Nederland, four other MSC vessels will be used during the trials ā€“ 2,668 TEU MV MSC Santhya, 2,768 TEU MV MSC Koroni, 4,340 TEU MV MSC Sandra and 4,355 TEU MV MSC Alyssa. The five vessels operate on the two MSC services currently calling at Liverpool ā€“ the North West Continent feeder serviceā€¦

In-port Container Weighing Introduced at Liverpool

Construction is complete on weighbridges at the port of Liverpool to help cargo owners comply with the new SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) international regulations on container weights. The multi-lane, in-process capability involved considerable work to install multiple dynamic axle weighbridges at the terminal AutoGates. It is linked with the terminal operating system and is able to automatically provide a verified gross mass (VGM) record for the container. 15 Terex Straddle Carriers for Liverpool Terminal

Terex Port Solutions (TPS) has received an order for 15 diesel-electric Terex N SC 634 E straddle carriers from the British terminal operator Peel Ports Group Ltd (Peel Ports). Five of these machines have already been in use at the Peel Ports terminal in Liverpool since June this year, ten more will be delivered to the Liverpool port with commissioning scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2015. The straddle carriers are designed for handling 1-over-2 high-cube containers and incorporate particularly eco-friendly diesel engines, which meet the requirements of the EU Stage IV (EPA Tier 4 final) emission class. The machines also feature the new Vetrocab, which offers drivers an excellent all round view for safe, efficient and ergonomic operation.

Peel Ports introduces Training Simulator on Site

In anticipation of the arrival of five of the worldā€™s largest cranes at the Port of Liverpool in the autumn, Peel Ports has introduced a state-of-the-art ā€˜virtualā€™ training simulator on site, designed to ensure all operators are ready to manoeuvre the giant structures from Day One of installation. Peel Ports has been working closely with ABB, a global leader in automation, to produce a customised, high-tech training simulator tailored to interactively test the abilities and skills of drivers by presenting them with realistic, operating scenarios. The Company has invested over £500,000 in developing the simulator and the associated software.

Peel Ports Invests in AutoGate System at Liverpool

Peel Ports have awarded a Ā£5.5 million contract to Kalmar Global and APS Technology to install smart AutoGates technology at its Ā£300m deep-water expansion project at the Port of Liverpool (example Baltimore)

Peel Ports Group has committed £5.5 million to introducing advanced infrastructure and AutoGates technology as part of its ongoing investment at the Port of Liverpool. With the £300 million deepwater Liverpool2 expansion due to be open next year, this latest development is set to strengthen the port-side logistics required to support increased cargo volume. At present, a manual system is currently in place, requiring drivers to register at a site office, where they complete a form and wait for clearance before entering.

Kalmar SmartLane Automated Gate System for Liverpool Port

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, will deliver Kalmar SmartLane automated gate system to Port of Liverpool, operated by Peel Ports Group. The new system will reduce waiting times and administration for hauliers, resulting in faster turnaround. The implementation is scheduled to be completed by early 2015. Investment in Kalmar SmartLane automated gate system is part of Peelport's £5.5m package of improvements to port infrastructure. With the £300m deep-water Liverpool2 expansion due to be open next year, this latest development is set to strengthen the port-side logistics required to support increased cargo volume. Peel Ports Invests £8m in the Port of Liverpool

An £8 million investment in the Port of Liverpoolā€™ animal feed warehouse facility makes it the largest of its type in the U.K., increasing capacity by 60% to 400,000sq.ft, allowing Peel Ports Group to add value to its customer supply chains and create effective logistics solutions, the company said. The Port of Liverpool is the U.K.ā€™s most centrally positioned port and can uniquely connect by water to the major conurbations of Glasgow, Dublin, Belfast and Manchester, via the Manchester Ship Canal.

Liverpool Container Terminal Drives Technology Upgrade

The development of a £300 million container terminal in Liverpool (U.K.) is driving a major technology investment by Britainā€™s second largest ports group. Peel Ports is introducing the Navis N4 terminal operation system ā€“ acclaimed as the gold standard in global container management ā€“ at eight sites in the U.K. and Ireland. The upgrade is being driven by Liverpool2 ā€“ a new container hub for the U.K. and Ireland which will serve as the enabling platform from which the group will standardise and centralise its terminal operation systems.

Peel Ports, JCB and Briggs Partner Across Supply Chain

Briggs Equipment is helping Peel Ports Liverpool to maintain the nation's supply of animal feed after securing a multi-million pound contract to supply and service JCB equipment to one of the country's busiest ports. One of Britain's largest port groups, the Peel Ports Group operates five major gateways, handling a broad spectrum of international trade amounting to more than 65 million tons of cargo a year. The Peel Ports facility in Liverpool is home to the country's largest animal feed store and as a result has taken delivery of five new JCB wheel loaders supplied by Briggs.
