NAVSEA Diving and Salvage Supervisor Honored

The Navy captain who led the salvage and recovery efforts of the Japanese fishing vessel Ehime Maru in Hawaii was selected as the recipient of the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Gold Medal Award for 2001. Capt. Bert Marsh, Director of Ocean Engineering and Supervisor of Salvage and Diving for Naval Sea Systems Command was selected for this award for his significant contributions to naval engineering for the five year period 1996-2001. During that time period, Marsh led several high-profile repair, salvage and recovery efforts including the recovery of an Egypt Air commercial airliner following its crash off the coast of New England in 1999…

VADM Balisle takes helm at NAVSEA

Vice Adm. Phillip M. Balisle assumed command of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) in Washington D.C. on June 28. the Chief of Naval Operations staff at the Pentagon, succeeds Vice Adm. NAVSEA Commander to Retire Next Week

Pete Nanos, who led Naval Sea Systems Command through a corporate renaissance over the past four years, will retire from the Navy on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at the Washington Navy Yard after 35 years of service. Nanos, a native of Bedford, N.H., has commanded NAVSEA, the Navy's largest acquisition organization since May 1998. In addition, he is also the Navy's senior engineering duty officer. Vice Admiral Nanos Retires

NAVSEA Awards Contract for DDG 102

construction of the next Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, DDG 102. (NGSS) on June 17, 2002. Rear Admiral Dwyer Takes Helm of PEO Carriers

Rear Adm. Dennis Dwyer relieved Rear Adm. Roland Knapp as Program Executive Officer (PEO) for Aircraft Carriers during a Change of Command ceremony on July 26 at the Washington Navy Yard. Dwyer, a Philadelphia native, leads the team responsible for the acquisition and development of aircraft carriers and air platforms of the future, as well as modernizing and upgrading the present carrier fleet to support the Chief of Naval Operation's "Sea Power 21" concept. Navy Diving Community Supports Miners’ Rescue

The rescue of the nine coal miners in Somerset, Pa. last weekend involved the efforts of several local, state and federal agencies working together. This team included members of the Navy’s diving and salvage community, including divers from Naval Sea Systems Command’s Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) directorate and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technical Division in Indian Head, Md. When the Navy learned of the mine collapse, the Chief of Naval Operations’ Office directed SUPSALV to support the rescue operations by providing assistance and equipment to treat the miners for possible decompression problems.
