UKEF Support Brings Success for Blyth

An export win by Blyth Workcats and UK Export Finance, made possible by the government’s export finance support. The project – to supply a purpose built catamaran for a German University research program – went ahead thanks to the support of UK Export Finance, the UK’s export credit agency. It stepped in to share some of the financing risk with Blyth’s bank, enabling the export to go ahead, where it otherwise would not. Blyth Workcats, which produces catamarans for the UK and in a growing number of overseas markets, won the contract in December 2015. The additional finance was required due to the German buyer’s requirement for an advance payment bond, which can be a common challenge for exporters.

Not in Compliance with Ballast Rules? You Will Pay

The U.S. Coast Guard published regulations establishing penalties for ships headed to the U.S. that fail to submit a ballast water management reporting form, as well as vessels bound for the Great Lakes or portions of the Hudson River that violate mandatory ballast water management requirements. These regulations also increase the number of vessels subject to the reporting and recordkeeping provisions and expand the reporting and recordkeeping requirements on ships, increasing the Coast Guard’s ability to prevent the introduction of nonindigenous species as required by the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Prevention and Control Act and the National Invasive Species Act.

Coast Guard Commemorates Women’s History Month

Members of the original Coast Guard Women's Reserve are scheduled to make a presentation Wednesday morning during a Women's History Month celebration at the Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay facility here. The establishment of the Coast Guard Women's Reserve in 1942 represented the first time women were accepted into the enlisted ranks of the Coast Guard. Women were allowed to fill shore positions while their male counterparts were deployed overseas. The Women's Reserve, more commonly known as the SPARS - an acronym taken from the Coast Guard's motto, Semper Paratus - Always Ready - provided the opportunity for women to directly participate as members of the armed services. Ann Wikowski, Charlotte Bart and Dorothy Dempsey enlisted in the Women's Reserve in 1943.

Coast Guard: Submerged Anchor Caused Spill

The Coast Guard has completed the investigation into the cause of the oil spill from the Greek tanker Athos I that occurred on the Delaware River on the evening of November 26, 2004. Coast Guard investigators concluded that the vessel came in contact with a submerged anchor while maneuvering through Anchorage #9 enroute to its berth at the Citgo Asphalt Refining Facility in Paulsboro, N.J. The anchor punctured the vessel’s bottom plating in a ballast tank and a cargo tank, resulting in the release of nearly 264,000 gallons of crude oil. Following the incident, surveys of the river bottom in the vicinity of the casualty were conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers and commercial surveyors contracted by the vessel’s owner.
