Hapag-Lloyd has entered into a partnership with logistics provider DB Schenker to decarbonise supply chains through the use of biofuels.The two companies have signed an agreement for emission-reduced container transports with a waste- and residue-based biofuel. By end of 2023, DB Schenker plans to claim approximately 3,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions avoidance. This is based on at least 1,000 tonnes of pure biofuel.Hapag-Lloyd launched the Ship Green product to offer its customers emission-reduced ocean transports.

Volvo Cars has announced that it is switching delivery of its production material to container ships using renewable biofuel.The company will use renewable fuel for inbound ocean container transport of production material destined for manufacturing plants based in Europe and the Americas, as well as all spare parts distribution made globally by ocean container transport.Volvo Cars says that it is the first global car maker to announce such a switch which will achieve an immediate reduction in fossil CO2 emissions from intercontinental ocean freight by 55,000 tonnes a year.

Supply chain management and logistics solutions firm DB Schenker plans to build a fully-electric, zero-emission, un-crewed coastal container feeder to serve the route between Ikornnes quay and the Port of Ålesund in Norway. Danish shipping  conglomerate A.P. Malini Dutt, Robert Feng and Martin Hubenack have recently been appointed to represent the port of Antwerp in India, China and Eastern Europe respectively. This brings the number of port representatives to 12, reinforcing Antwerp's presence in its core hinterland and important overseas growth regions. The task of these representatives is to keep Antwerp "top of mind" with local companies, ports, chambers of commerce and other players. With an annual freight volume of 6.4 million tonnes carried between it and the Indian ports, Antwerp is the European market leader for this region. India is one of the fastest-expanding economies in the world, with an annual growth rate of 7%. Malini Dutt joins Raj Khalid, so that Antwerp now has two representatives in the port city of Mumbai.

Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) has engaged in a new collaboration to increase freight traffic by train to and from Northern Harbour. The new train service starts from the Netherlands and serves Malmö three times a week. Freight traffic by rail will now increase in Malmö and Northern Harbour. The German forwarding agent Kombiverkehr has established a new train service which will serve Malmö three times a week. The first train, with a capacity up to 36 carriages, arrived on January 29.

DB Schenker Logistics and Maersk Line have signed a six-year strategic agreement on reducing CO2 emissions from ocean freight. The partnership emphasizes the companies' shared commitment to sustainable growth, says a press release by DB Schenker. Maersk Line will undertake to reduce the CO2 emissions of every container it ships on behalf of DB Schenker Logistics between now and 2020 by 20% compared to 2014 levels. "This is the first agreement between a global logistics services provider and a container shipping company," says Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, Chief Sustainability Officer of Deutsche Bahn AG and Management Board Member for Transportation and Logistics at DB Mobility Logistics AG. New shipping services are being announced as the second berth at DP World London Gateway opens for business. Britain’s newest port doubled its capacity as the second berth began operations in May. Five new shipping routes to North America, South America East Coast and West Coast, the Middle East and Europe are starting. New rail, road and container services are also announced. The G6, one of the world’s largest shipping alliances, will start a new service at DP World London Gateway on Friday, May 16.

We just missed the 5 million ton mark in cargo handling, but at the same time we can look back on the port’s highest passenger totals for ten years. Given the current global economic situation, it’s a good thing that we are so multi-faceted in the Port of Kiel.
