Ukraine struck a large Russian landing warship in Crimea with cruise missiles in an overnight attack that killed at least one person and could hinder any Russian attempt to seize more Ukrainian territory along the Black Sea coast.The Russian defence ministry, cited by the Interfax news agency, said Ukraine had used air-launched missiles to attack the Crimean port of Feodosia and that the Novocherkassk large landing ship had been damaged.Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had briefed President Vladimir Putin in detail about the attack, the Kremlin said.

Russia could supply air defence systems and other equipment to the Indian Vikrant-class aircraft carrier currently under construction, says a report by IANS. The first of the Vikrant-class aircraft carriers, the INS Vikramaditya, is Russian-built. The second vessel of the class, INS Vikrant, is set to become Indias first indigenous carrier. However, according to Viktor Kladov,  the head of Russian conglomerate Rostec, India still needs Russia’s technical assistance in various aspects of the INS Vikrant project. “Guidance systems, air defense systems, as well as various systems of airborne weaponry, including anti-aircraft, could be supplied on board the aircraft carrier.

Imtech has received new orders for new and existing ships from the Royal Netherlands and Belgian navies worth over $37.6m. Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (Vlissingen, the Netherlands), builder of the new logistic support ship Karel Doorman of the Royal Netherlands Navy, granted Imtech the contract for the design, production, delivery and implementation of various technological solutions on board this Joint Support Ship (JSS). Imtech also obtained orders for a technological upgrade of the Royal Netherlands Navy's supply vessel 'Hr. Ms. Amsterdam' dating from 1995 and a technological upgrade of two M-class frigates owned by the Belgian Navy. Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) recently awarded Kongsberg Defence Systems a contract for the delivery of one Kongsberg TOPAS PS 18 Parametric Sub-bottom Profiler system. The contract was handled through the Kongsberg agent in Japan, Nippon Kaiyo Co. Ltd. The system will be installed on board R/V Hakurei-Maru No.2 in February 2010, and it will replace an existing Atlas Parasound system. The intended use of the system is for resource mapping, research etc. in deep waters. The contract was won in an open competition. This is the first Kongsberg TOPAS system to be delivered to Japan. The Kongsberg TOPAS Parametric Sub-bottom Profilers are being used world-wide for commercial, scientific, military, and various research purposes.

Sea-Tow Limited has won a tender with Bechtel Australia Pty Limited to barge large fabricated modules from Brisbane to Gladstone for the construction of Comalco’s new alumina refinery. The 13-month contract will involve at least 30 voyages consisting of assemblies weighing between 50 and 380 tonnes. The assemblies will be rolled on and off the barge using a heavy lift platform trailer provided and operated by Mammoet. Mr Graham Phillips, from Adsteam Harbour – Brisbane, has been appointed as Sea-Tow’s Project Manager for the contract, bringing many years of marine project experience to the team. He will co-ordinate and oversee all aspects of the project in Brisbane and Gladstone.
